Morning Free Association: Lightning Strikes

The Bruins were 3-0 on this road trip down the East Coast. In Tampa, would they make it 4-0?

Nope. They wouldn’t.

Steven Stamkos netted his 40th goal of the season to start off the scoring. Brad Marchand got one of his own, his 33rd, under two minutes later.

Bruins defenseman John Moore got knocked out of the game on a hit from Adam Erne. He left the ice clutching his left arm.

Stupid Steven Stamkos scored another before the period was over, taking a 2-1 lead into the first intermission.

In the second, the Bruins would take over and show the Bolts what they could do.

First it was Charlie Coyle with his second goal as a Bruins player.

Then MY BOY, Brandon Carlo, stepped up to the plate and scored a touchdown…er…he put the biscuit in the basket on a feed from David Krejci.

The Bolts came dclose to scoring with this double poster. Such good posts.

Marchy took over the team goal lead with his 34th to cap off the period. Bruins 4-2.

Connor Clifton was busy making all sorts of big hits all night. He collided with Ondrej Palat, who would not return to the game.

Later on, he would show Mathieu Joseph how hard he can hit.

In the third, the Bruins game fell apart as the Bolts scored three while pinning the Bruins in their zone for much of time. While the B’s killed off every penalty, including a four-minute one after David Pastrnak hi-sticked Ryan McDonagh, the team seemed gassed making plenty of mistakes that allowed the Lightning to get back in, take over, and ultimately win.

The team showed that they can be in the game with the Bolts, and that’s good.

I just watched the 3rd period again….and I hate to say it but Charlie Mcavoy was putrid…the boy needs to get in better shape to play a mans game.

Agreed. Not sure it was conditioning, but he made some boneheaded plays.

I often feel like that and that’s with MY job. Can’t imagine how I’d be if I had to do a real job!

The Bruins can beat the Lightning, but it will be tough. Let’s not overlook the Leafs, but a Bruins-Lightning matchup will be a delight.

While I think the Bs will beat the Leafs, recent history suggests it could be quite a bruising series.

They CAN beat the Lightning, but they’re going to have bring it for the full 60 in every game of that series.

THEN they probably got to beat Washington.

And THEN the SCF!

They’re a great team this year, but if they end up with the Cup they will definitely have earned it!

Leafs will be a tough out. They do give up a lot of goals, though. If Andersen isn’t in a zone, they will go quietly into that good night… was there ever anything better than the silence outside the Air Canada Centre after the 2013 first round o\t loss to the Bruins???? Well, there was that riot in Vancouver!

Hey All!
Great 40 minutes played by the Bruins last night!!! I think this shows that they can play with Tampa…. I feel they don’t match up with the Caps quite as well… Similar problem, though…. That left circle, Stamkos, Ovie, other right hand shots kill them from there!! We need a black hole in that area for two periods every home game!! Bull gang??? Get creative!!!
No quiero trabajar este dia!! I want to sleep!!!
No rest for the wicked (Jo! Go to work! I need rest!).

That left circle, Stamkos, Ovie, other right hand shots kill them from there!!

Is there anything they could do tactics-wise to combat that?

That said, it looks like the Bs identified an area of defensive weakness in the Lightning. Nine goals from 45 shots in the match! I’m sure I’ve seen the Bs take 45 shots and not score in a match before …

The trouble with Tampa is that they have too many other options!! Overplay Stammer and Kucherov, Point, or Hedman get you.

There were times last night where it was just demoralizing watching how much puck movement they had when they were playing outside, and how they could dominate the low slot & crease area when they were playing inside. The down-side of the latter is that if you can steal the puck, there is no-one between you and their net (as we saw with one of the goals the Bruins gave up).
