Morning Free Association: Lost Weekend

This is going to be short but not sweet. Your Boston Bruins sucked this weekend. They showed nary a sign of life on Saturday against the Panthers and even less through the first and part of the second period against the lowly Red Wings on Sunday. I know they scored 3 goals in the second, but by that time we had turned it off to instead watch American Gods, which was a better use of our time.

I know what you’re thinking. Yes, they played back-to-back and travelled and that’s why they played poorly on Sunday. That doesn’t excuse Saturday, though. You would think that after announcing the fans’ pick for The Seventh Player Award, Chris “The Mayor” Wagner, he who is from Walpole, that the B’s could muster something. His longtime friend, Noel Acciari scored the only goal in a 4-1 loss.

We even had the team inch closer to fully manned with the third line pairing of Matt Grzelcyk and Kevan Miller returning to action on Saturday and Sunday, respectively. Still, the team sucked.

If we can point to one positive thing that could happen in the few remaining games it’s this: if Brad Marchand scores two more goals and no more assists, he will have a stat line of 37G, 63A, 100 points, which is awesome.

The Bruins have three games left: at Columbus on Tuesday, at Minnesota on Thursday, and at home against Tampa Bay on Saturday. They haven’t locked up second place in the division yet with a game in hand on Toronto, They need all the points they can get. This lost weekend was poorly timed.

Get it together, boys!

I had a GREAT weekend. I was in a three day hockey tournament. We lost in the semifinals, but we all had so much fun. My brother and I played with people we normally play against, which made it special.

Also, my lone hockey stick broke after I bragged about how long it was lasting. Luckily, I had a nice teammate who let me use one of his extras.

I ordered two All Black Hockey Sticks sticks. 80 flex with a REDONKULOUS curve. I used to use the Jonathan Toews, but I prefer something more aggressive now.

Sounds great! Well done getting to the semis.

How long does a stick last? They’re not cheap are they.

I play once a week in a low level league. They last me about a year. I typically buy overstock CCM sticks from AHL teams. There’s an entire market and distribution for those. They cost about $115.

EDIT AND NOTE: AHL has a sponsorship deal with CCM, so there are a lot of prostock sticks floating around if you know a guy

Since I wanted two sticks, I went with All Black Hockey Sticks, a lesser known stick manufacturer. They are $90 a piece plus shipping, but I could get them sooner than I could my AHL stick guy. Apparently, All Black Hockey Sticks buys sticks directly from the overseas manufacturers which higher end sticks are made. The sticks though, literally have no markings on them. They are all black.

Yup, I used to know a Ranger but who would give us piles of used sticks and other gear.

You can spend $250, if you want. $40 for wood!!

Okay, I’ll be honest, I have two wooden sticks as super backups, but they are so heavy and I am a weak dude (I have the slowest shot on the team). Maybe I need to invest in getting a good wood stick!

I use a 70 flex….

I still use wood! The Sherwood 5030 with the Coffey curve….. Greatest stick ever.

I fucking love wood sticks. The puck feels heavy with the fancy sticks.

I liked the first half of the first period on Saturday, then they lost me.

I mean seriously – my mind has wandered during a game before, but I’m pretty sure I’ve watched all of the 78 previous games (minus getting home late from work on game night) – but I’ve never been so frustrated as to just turn the game off. The power-play that can’t maintain possession of the puck, and gives up golden shorthanded opportunities, and the puck-over-the-glass penalty just gets under your skin over time.

I know these games don’t mean all that much, but don’t go into the playoffs on a slide, don’t learn bad habits and forget good ones.

Hello,

Were there games this weekend? I don’t recall any games…

Maybe their heads are already in the playoffs. It really looked like they weren’t concentrating at times.
