Morning Free Association: Game 1

Last night’s Game 1 was not a gimme by any measure. If it is an indicator of what’s to come, goals will be hard to come by and the Bruins will be banged up in the end.

Last night’s banner captain was the Celtics’ Jaylen Brown. Of course on NBCSN, we don’t get to see this fun pre-game stuff anymore, so please enjoy the video in the tweet.

Of course, part of the Swedish House Mafia would choose a song by them for the Bruins Beat.

The physicality started early with all the hits, like this one by Torey Krug.

Columbus didn’t register a shot on goal until 6:52 of the first period. At one point, the Bruins led 6-0 in shots, ending the first period with 4 to the Bruins 14.

Noted dangerous goal scorer Noel Acciari got the Bruins on the board with a short handed goal at 10:34 in the first.

The major problem that the Bruins had in the first was coughing up the puck near their own net. It happened multiple times, most notably by Zdeno Chara losing the puck under him.

Cam Atkinson stopped up the puck, passed it to Ryan Dzingel and the Bruins got lucky.

In the second, no one scored even though each team had numerous opportunities and nearly four minutes of time with the man advantage. Brad Marchand had a chance at his own shorty but was denied in what wasn’t interference in any way.

During a late-period power play, Torey Krug channeled his inner shortstop, making the extra effort to keep the puck in the offensive zone.

David Krejci took a high hit and was knocked out of the game. Bruce Cassidy said later that he would be day-to-day with an UBI, non-concussion protocol.

Things started going south for the Bruins quickly before the middle of the third period. Charlie Coyle gives the puck away, resulting in an immediate goal from Brandon Dubinsky. It was followed by the go-ahead goal by Pierre-Luc Dubois.

At least Charlie Coyle has the resilience to come back and take control over the situation 2/3 of the way through the frame. This game would be settled in overtime.

In overtime, there was only one player who could win it for the Bruins: Charlie Coyle.

The Bruins escaped with a win but they will have to play better and stronger in the next game to win again.

Anybody see the Stars/Blues game?

I’ve never seen a dead-in-the-head goal be allowed to stand before. But then, I’ve only ever seen the Bruins score them…

I watched some, but missed that play.

It was very late and in the end didn’t matter, but I was amazed because I always assumed that was automatic no-goal. The whistle blew about 0.1 seconds after puck crossed the line. Seen it many times. Never seen it called a goal before.

BTW, “dead in the head” applies to most of us refs.

Hey all,

Looks like it’s going to be a fun series.

Was far too tired to watch any live, but from the highlights it looked like the Bs could’ve had five or six on the board by the halfway stage. The Jackets are no longer unbeaten in the playoffs!

Fingers crossed for Krejci – that would be a big loss.

The Krejci mystery is scary, and not groovy at all. I always am frustrated by the Cassidy optimism about a player’s status after the game because it has no bearing on the likelihood of the player being able to play the next game.

It’s good to see the Bruins have done 2 things that the Bolts failed to do – get past the first round, and win a playoff game vs the Blue Jackets
