Morning Free Association: It’s Official

It’s official, the Stanley Cup Final matchup is finally set. In a rematch of the 1970 Stanley Cup Final, the Bruins will face off against the St. Louis Blues. It’s been 49 years since the Blues have advanced this far, the last of three straight SCF appearances. And we know how that worked out.

We shouldn’t get cocky; this Blues team has fought through the adversity of bad goaltending, a coaching change, and a long playoff run.The B’s had trouble with them both times they faced them, so this is no cakewalk.

Now’s the time for predictions, guys. I think this one will go to seven, with the Stanley Cup being raised by the home team after a grueling playoff run.

If you didn’t get that: Bruins in 7.

Let’s go!

The Sharks’ rally towels are pretty sweet:

You’d have got good odds for that!

I had the Blues playing Tampa in one bracket and Bruins v Nashville in my other one.

I picked the Bruins ’cause I’m a total homer and there seemed something sneaky good about the Blues. Maybe it was the Hot Goalie Syndrome potential with Binnington. They seemed to be gelling at exactly the right time, too.

The Blues are better than Carolina but not as good as Columbus or Toronto. Bruins in five.

I feel like the Bruins are the deeper team, but that is because I have not heard of anyone on the Blues.

My overall take is that we’re deeper on offense, defense is about the same, and our goaltending is better.

I feel that the Blues are better than Carolina and Columbus…. a lil shy of Toronto.

Although, Binnington is no Bob or Andersen. That does swing the compass a bit towarfs CBJ.

Torontp is only going to gey better!!! Can they move to the Western Conference????

Toronto is only going to get better if they fix their right-side defense. That’s gonna be a tall order with their cap issues – they’ll need to make trades to fix the problem instead of getting UFA right-shot d-men.

Have you guys been following the story of St. Louis Blues fan Laila Anderson? She’s an 11-year-old with a rare autoimmune disease. I’m sure you have seen her story, but the following video just gets me right in the feels.

I want the Bruins to win, but if the Blues win instead, I will be happy for Laila.

Blues are CBJlike, but with better offensive punch…
Wouldn’t it be crazy if the Bruins swept the Blues, Krug scoring on a give and go in O/T of game 4???? Who would play Derek Sanderson’s part?? Johansson, maybe.

I’m thinking Coyle would be a great Sanderson. Both guys are centers and play big.

Well, history does have a habit of repeating itself!

You’d have been, what, a young teenager at the time? Do you remember watching it live?

I was twelve! Very fuzzy black and white feed from WWLP Springfield!!!! My older sister was dating an American kid who got drafted by the Habs, so we already had hockey fever!!!

My dad was a big Wayne Cashman fan, for obvious reasons…. I remember “weekend in Canada” being his favorite song at the time… dirty looks from my ma!!

Heh. My mom taught elementary school in No. Reading when Cashman’s daughter was there. She said he was a pretty nice guy in person.

Huh, to me the Blues look like CBJ with less offense and weaker goaltending.

Hi folks.

Great effort from the Blues, it must be said. Weren’t they rock bottom at Christmas, or something? They had a terrible start for sure.

I’m gonna go Bs in six, although it would be nice to see them lift the Cup at the Garden.

Both teams have had good, deep forward pools so it could come down to a goal tending duel and there’ll only be one winner of that!

Darts season is over but the landlord of our home pub has put some money behind the bar for us tonight, so we’re going to have a scrimmage of our own! (Intra-team match). Hopefully the Bs one will involve less drunkenness – on the part of the players at least!

They were rock bottom back in December. So rock bottom there was a fight during practice!

Yeah, if you had told me back in December that Columbus, St. Louis, and Carolina would all go farther in the playoffs than Tampa I would have thought you were drunk!
