Morning Free Association: Well, It’s Going to Five

The Bruins played a no-good, very bad, horrible game last night. Okay, that might be a bit overstated. But saying they didn’t play as well as they could is extremely accurate.

Some Bruins players had their moments, notably Joakim Nordstrom playing the part of “2011 Gregory Campbell: The Uninjured Version”. Yeah, Nordy took a puck off the leg, accepted his pain, and kept going. Later he would learn to use his stick to block as well.

David Backes decided in the second that he had had enough of Sam Blais’ shit.

Charlie Coyle got the B’s on the board with a power play goal early in the first.

The Blues tied it up within five minutes.

“Lordy Lordy, Thank God It’s Nordy” took back the lead. Seriously, what we do without the fourth line?

Then Vladimir Tarasenko knotted it up 3/4 of the way through the first.

Seriously, all the goals happened in the first period. It would be a long game after in which no scoring happened.

During the course of the game, we lost a defenseman. Near the end of the first, Matt Grzelcyk was boarded by Oskar Sundqvist.

He was helped off the ice, brought back to the room and subsequently to the hospital.

That meant defensemen were playing all sorts of shifts with all sorts of partners.

The penalty kill was excellent, killing all three opportunities for the Blues including a tense double minor on Connor Clifton. After negating 2:17 of the Blues’ power play, the Bruins had an odd man rush that resulted in time off the clock, a change in gassed defensemen Chara and Carlo, and ultimately a goaltender interference penalty called against Jaden Schwartz when he rushed back down the ice.

This game went to overtime. Well, 3:51 of an extra period when Carl Gunnarsson scored his first goal of these playoffs. Brandon Carlo was going to be called for a trip. With the delayed penalty, the Blues had an extra skater, never gave up the puck and scored.

Despite letting in three goals, Tuukka Rask went 34-37 with a .919 save percentage. The rest of the Bruins need to regroup and come out fired up for Game 3 on Saturday in St. Louis.

I feel Sundqvist may not have attempted to injure Grizz, but he was reckless. The onus is on the hitter to avoid the head. Any history for him??? If not, one game suspension.

Hey hockey pals!

I still think we win the Cup, but I think we are splitting each homestand.

Also, I’m tired and really mad about Grizz. Like, really mad.

Yeah, that was a predatory hit.
I think he gets off because Grizz moves his head late, but what the hell was Sundqvist targeting above shoulder height if not the head?

That’s the thing. The only thing he could be trying to hit above the shoulders is the head. Come. On.
