Morning Free Association: D-Day

It was an emotional night. Bobby Orr and Derek Sanderson shared banner captain duties. Zdeno Chara returned to the lineup after breaking his jaw during Game 4.

We love our captain. He’s a warrior, a beast. He deserved the ovation he got.

Most likely because we have lost 2 defensemen in 2 games this series, the Bruins iced a lineup with 7D and 11F.

First Period:

Other than a dubious reputation call against Brad Marchand, not much happened. Sure, each team had a power play opportunity, nothing came of them.

Oh, and potentially punishable hits against Bruins.

Second Period:

Ryan O’Reilly scored 0:55 of the second.

Blues decided to cheap shot and go high on Torey Krug, not once but twice by David Perron and Zach Sanford.

Finally, David Perron was called for Interference. The Bruins Twitter account was here for it.

Don’t worry, the B’s didn’t capitalize upon it.

Blues got away with a late period holding on Torey Krug, a scramble in front of the net left it open and a shot was coming. David Krejci made the save of the game despite all the commotion in the closing seconds of the frame.

Afterward, Krejci went up to the official to complain about the non-call on the obvious holding.

Third Period:

At 10:36, David Perron scored after Noel Acciari was tripped by Tyler Bozak. No refs caught the penalty, play was not stopped, the Blues went up 2-0.

Finally, Jake DeBrusk scores! During the play, Torey Krug got hi-sticked on the play which was a delayed penalty.

Despite some good effort towards the end, the Bruins came up short. Yes, the Bruins didn’t do enough, despite outshooting the Blues 39-21. The top line was just plain absent after the first, and the most notable play by a forward was Krejci’s save. Yes, it was more important than DeBrusk’s goal.

After the game, Bruce Cassidy was salty calling the league’s officiating in these games past Game 3 “a black eye”

Here’s his full quote as captured by Greg Wyshynski of ESPN.

“Those are the hits they want to get out of the game, correct? That’s what I hear a lot about. Clearly, they missed a couple tonight. It’s a fast game. I sat here two days ago or whatever it was and said I believe these officials are at this level because they’ve earned the right to be here. You should be getting the best. But, I mean, the narrative changed after Game 3. There’s a complaint or whatever put forth by the opposition. It just seems to have changed everything. The no-call on Acciari … their player is on his way to the box. It’s right in front of the official. It’s a slew foot. Our guy’s gone. The spotter took him out of the game for a possible concussion. I mean, it’s blatant. It had a big effect on the game. This has happened. I’m a fan of the game. It’s the National Hockey League’s getting a black-eye with their officiating in these playoffs, and there’s another one that’s going to be talked about. I thought it was a great hockey game. That call, probably … there’s time, but it really made it difficult for us to get the win tonight. So I’m disappointed. So I guess to answer your original question, it was egregious. But we’re moving on. We’re getting ready for Game 6.” – Bruce Cassidy, Bruins coach, on the officiating in their Game 5 loss.

Fix the officiating before next game, fine. But make sure your players are ready to win, Bruins.

RE: coworkers today

I am not into gatekeeping fans, HOWEVER, I will absolutely gatekeep the people who get to talk to me about last night’s game. If you only watch like four games a year, get the fuck out of my face, you’re not feeling my pain.

Hey hockey pals.

I’m irrationally angry right now. I was belligerent when I was talking to my therapist this morning. He thought that was pretty funny. Then he said something like, “what happens if the Bruins lose” and I said, WE DON’T TALK LIKE THAT AROUND HERE, CHRIS.

Seriously though, I’m tired and cranky and we wouldn’t be in the position if they fucking came to play. They weren’t bad but they weren’t good and if they had even been just a little bit better we’d be having a whole other conversation today.

What the hell kind of therapist asks questions like that?!?! He should be disbarred or defrocked or whatever it is they do doctor people when they do horrible things like that.

Heather says he’s a quack, and that’s the second medical professional I’ve seen in a week that she’s called a quack.

Well… if it walks like a duck,
and it talks like a duck,
you might just be obsessed with ducks.

My biggest problem with the noncalls is they all happened in the direct line of sight of the officials.

Exactly. RIGHT IN FRONT OF THEM.

I feel Sanford and Barbashave should be suspended. Not much difference between those hits and the one by Sundqvist (or is it Sundquake?). [Quisp and Quake reference for all those not old enough]. I really hope this works!!!! So much work for an old brain.

Hi Pals!!!
As an official, i don’t even want to show my letters here this morning. Last night’s game was an embarrassment from an officiating point of view. These guys review the previous period in the locker room at intermission… They had to know they owed the Bruins a couple…(the head shots!)…. The slew foot!!!! I’m especially cognizant of slew foots as i’ve been concussed (is that right, Mike Tyson?) that way a couple times…. you’re really helpless when your feet are swept out from behind.
Oh well, the boys were down vs Vancouver, so they’ve been there…. pull up your socks, boys, time to go to work!!!!

I’ll admit to being grumpy when the calls go too much against my team, but today I am pretty upset about last night’s officiating because they didn’t protect the players. You gotta flag the slewfooting, boarding & head shots.

Morning all.

Time to dig deep, Bruins. They’ve come from behind twice these playoffs and faced elimination once before,. They know they can do it. And if they have play against the refs as well then so be it.

How nervous are St Louis going to be on Sunday? Talk about pressure and weight of expectation! Use that, Bs.

Slovakian radio this morning called Chara ‘a Terminator’. How did he look? I had to settle for the highlights and didn’t see much of him (woke up twice in the night – once before the game started, once (presumably) after it had finished. D’oh!).

Chara looked pretty good. This is the play that stood out for me

I think he was only on the ice for 10 minutes though.

Thanks!

Bloody hell, looked like Schenn was going for a high hit there, too, eh?!

Yeah, you noticed that too?
The Blues were borderline headhunting all night. I am fairly salty about it.
