Morning Free Association: Our New Season is the Offseason

Embed from Getty Images

So the offseason is here. Soon will come the Boston Bruins breakdown day when we find out about all the injuries that everyone had, including the top line.

The ice at the Garden is already being destroyed, to be created again in September in preparation for the next season.

While the NHL’s new league year doesn’t officially begin until Canada Day on July 1st, there are a number of other important dates (compiled by CapFriendly) to wrap up the current year and to begin the next.

It’ll be interesting to see how the second contracts for Charlie McAvoy, Brandon Carlo, and Danton Heinen get worked out.

I’m just not ready to talk about any of this.

I’m not really one for jersey fashion (or is it sweater?) but I like this, even if it the Canucks. Would look better on team Germany though!

Hey hockey pals.

I’m still sad. All sorts of feelings here. Not sure I’m getting over this one.

Morning all. Still sad as well. I really really really wanted this group to win it. And between this, Buckner, and Ortiz it’s just been a shitty sports run.

Yeah. I hate everything. And, there’s very little solace for me because I give zero shits about football. I’m happy about the World Series because I love the Sox, but the Stanley Cup is the big one for me. I’m so bummed.

I always find The Cup more special than other championships because there’s something about there being only one Cup and not a new trophy every year.

Don’t get me wrong, I love when my baseball team wins but there’s just something special about Lord Stanley.

And I love the tradition surrounding it all with players getting a day with The Cup and getting their name son it. Plus it’s really really big.

Good morning friends,

Ok, I’ll try a bit of distraction:

The Athletic, which I gather is a US-based subscription sports news service, is launching a UK version soon and they’ve been snapping up some prominent journalistic talent over here to work for them (my offer will be arriving any day now I’m sure…).

Anyway, we were talking this morning about whether we think it’ll work over here – where there is already a ton of great sport content available for free.

Someone pointed out that Americans are used to paying for things we as Brits take for granted (although we pay a licence fee for BBC TV, radio and internet content but it’s compulsory so people don’t consider it ‘paying extra).

Netflix and Spotify (or Apple Music, which is my preference) have caught on over here but that’s largely because the quality of those services is absolutely top notch.

So I was wondering if any of you subscribe to The Athletic, whether you think it’s worth the money, what makes it worth the money, etc. Just out of interest.

I don’t use the Athletic, or any other pay service…. I can find The Hockey News online, as well as Yahoo Sports, TSN (Canadian). Hockey Night in Boston is free at most ice rinks in my area…
There’s plenty of info out there.

I’m sure they’ll be knocking down your door at any moment!

The “Americans are used to paying for things Brits take for granted” is a canard (in this case). The model is almost exactly the same. Athletic snapped up talent from ESPN, Yahoo, print newspapers, etc., forcing people who were getting good sports content for free to pay extra for it. It’s still a bit controversial.
I have not yet gotten an Athletic subscription but am considering it.

Good to know! This is quite a widely-held belief over here so I’m happy to be put straight.

Thanks all for your input, I appreciate that

They have the best hockey coverage. It’s not even close.

As for Brits taking to it, I can’t speak on that front. I bought a subscription for the hockey content. They got great writers and allow them to do their thing. I am sure that model will be copied overseas.

There are plenty of other sports the Athletic covers, but they are not my go-to on those. Granted, I don’t care much for other leagues. I follow the NHL and college (American) football and that’s it.
