Morning Free Association: Bruins Moves

Yesterday was the start of NHL Free Agency and the Bruins signed some players, some of which we’ve heard of and some that we haven’t.

The two big signings were Brett Ritchie, formerly of the Dallas Stars, and Pär Lindholm, of the Winnipeg Jets via Toronto. Both were signed for $1 million or under.

Don Sweeney got his goalie in Maxime Lagacé, who signed to a one-year two-way deal. The other two-way deal was for a Brendan Gaunce, who spent most of his time with the Utica Comets last season.

Perhaps the big signing for the Bruins yesterday was an extension that doesn’t kick in until after the upcoming season: Connor Clifton signed a three-year, one-way extension with the Bruins with an AAV of $1 million.

Of course, the Bruins are losing some pieces. Marcus Johansson is getting plenty of attention from other teams and Don Sweeney said that the B’s had not offered a contract to him as of now.

This we knew would happen. We also knew that Noel Acciari would likely be signing elsewhere, which he did with Florida for three years and $5 million.

He’s joining a team that landed the big fish in Sergei Bobrovsky, added depth to their defense with Anton Stralman, and some scoring with former Bruins Brett Connolly. Noel was even on NHL Tonight talking about his move.

Sigh, now I’m sad. Again.

As of last night, the Bruins have $10,153,334 in cap space available and they still have RFAs to sign. There were rumors of Don Sweeney offering up Joakim Nordstrom for trade. And word is that now that David Backes received his $3 million signing bonus, the Bruins wanted and got his trade list.

He’s only owed $5 over this and the next season while his cap figure of $6 million could help a team needing to make the floor. It’s possible he could be traded to a team on his list, then flipped onto another team (like say Ottawa) because his modified NTC could be declined by the GM who trades for him. This is what happened with PK Subban when he went to Nashville. It’s even possible that Joakim Nordstrom could be thrown in the deal to sweeten the deal. At any rate, something will have to happen with this or other contracts.

Hey hockey pals.

I am not mad about what the Bruins did/didn’t do, but I’m wondering why you bother wasting money on Brett Ritchie and whatever a Per Svensson or whatever the hell his name is, is.

I’m a little disappointed that they are out on Mojo, but their cap is too tight to have expected anything else.

Sad about Noeldozer.

Ritchie seems like a bit of a toughnut so I was thinking he might slot onto the fourth line in place of 55.

It sounds like that’s their plan. Get a guy to play Acciari’s game without spending the increased money needed to retain him.

Morning all. Some interesting moves yesterday around the league. Glad the Bs didn’t overspend on anything.

In other news – this guy has apparently been a member of staff for a while, and I can’t remember seeing him before:

Morning all. I’m not sure what’s more hilarious. Montreal offer sheeting Aho or Carolina trolling them on Twitter about it.
