Morning Free Association: Oldest Active NHL Player

With the retirement of Matt Cullen last Wednesday after a 21-year career in the NHL, Zdeno Chara became the oldest active player in the NHL. The big guy is taking it all in stride.

It’s hard to believe I’m now the oldest active player in the NHL. It’s been a long time since my rookie season but this game always keeps me young. Having the opportunity to play in the league all these years with and against the best players in the world has taught me time and time again that it’s a humbling game and age is just a number!

Zdeno Chara once again masterfully played the moment with a photoshopped image of him as an old-timey Bruins player from sometime in the 30’s. Of course, he’s grateful to have had this experience and is ready to take on the mantle of oldest hockey player.

What’s funny is that he and Cullen were the same age, 42, with Cullen just 136 days older, having been born in November 1976.

Big Zee wants to play until he’s 45, like another Boston area athlete his age aspires to do. Let’s see if they both can.

Morning folks.

Zee – what a legend! Limit his minutes and there’s no reason he can’t still be effective at 45. Sure he’s slow, but speed was never his game.

Had a fantastic weekend being wined and dined at the British Grand Prix. One of the team’s sponsor is a sports betting company and they invited me and about ten other journalists. Mostly guys who run their own internet sites, which was really interesting talking to them and a bit of an eye opener since the company I work for are still very much a traditional media outlet. We need to change!

I got to meet one of the drivers, and also the boxer Tony Bellew. He’s retired now but is some sort of Brand Ambassador. Back to reality, with the school run this morning!

Haha, it was quite pleasant inside but very hot when the sun was out, very cold when it wasn’t and not at all sound proof (although they did provide earplugs!)

Morning all. Back in the office. Boo! We’re doing our summer take every other Friday off thing and last Friday was my day off. I didn’t do much of anything which was glorious. Needed to to decompress after the Hell Weekend that was 4th of July and Mad Marathon. So….many….people…

Hi Pals!!!
Zee is younger than my oldest son…. did not need reminding on a Monday morning.
Beautiful weekend up north. The plan evolves. A lot of progress in the last month after a slow spring. Heading back up Friday morning. Kayak polo on the reservoir just north of the house all weekend!
Also, our neighbor with the three Labradors moved one house away…. No more land mines in the backyard!!

Time to take you to the old folks home! Speaking of, my parents are probably at the old folks home right now having free Monday breakfast! And my dad loves being old so much he’s now the Waitsfield, VT cemetery commissioner!

Zee is slightly older than me, which makes me feel simultaneously good (I’m not old – I’m younger than an awesome NHL player …) and bad (so why do things hurt more than they used to?!)

Although a few days ago I found an old pair of glasses of mine (like three or four pairs ago) and I can actually see sharper through them than my current specs. Unfortunately the old ones are bent and don’t lie straight on my nose. Is it possible for your eyes to get better as you get older? Need to go talk to the optician…
