Morning Free Association: Bruins Media Day, Transactions, and a Store Opening

The Bruins held their annual media day ahead of the start of the 2019-20 season. Brad Marchand and Tuukka Rask were on hand to talk about recovering from the Game 7 loss and how the team seems ready to go, without much need to develop chemistry.

David Krejci is still day-to-day with his lower body injury, looking questionable for Thursday season opener in Dallas. But he’s skating, so that’s good.

If he’s not ready to go, Par Lindholm will sub for him on the second line.

Brandon Carlo spoke with the media about how it’s good to start on the road to bond with the boys over a beer at dinner and how players coming off their ELCs get their own rooms on the road. Oh, and you know, expectations for the season.

Charlie Coyle echoed those sentiments about bonding.

Word also came out that Don Sweeney is in preliminary talks with both Charlie Coyle, Torey Krug, and Jake DeBrusk about contract extensions.

“They’re all ongoing,” said Sweeney, when asked about contract negotiations with the aforementioned players. “You will not hear through us where those deals are at and that’s really out of respect for every deal that you negotiate.

“We have discussions that need to take place and the other side will hopefully respect that as well. We are in discussions with the players we’ve discussed, because they are a part of our group right now and a very important part of our group. And if things work out and we find that common ground, they probably will be for a long time.”

It’s good to start early so we don’t end up fretting over the summer.

The Bruins made some final roster transactions with Peter Cehalrik clearing waivers and Jakub Zboril joining him down in Providence. Joakim Nordstrom, who is still recovering from a broken foot, is starting the season on IR.

Finally, the Bruins opened up their new Pro Shop, located on the first floor of the Hub on Causeway which is just convenient in so many ways. Your correspondent decided to check it out with roughly 200 other people. Brad Marchand, Kevan Miller, Jake DeBrusk, and Brandon Carlo all were there for the occasion manning the registers. And this happened:

I don’t want to say too much about this because I’m saving it up for Bearly on Topic (New Episode out now!) this weekend but I will tell you that I was bouncing all evening afterward.

Does anyone else think that Getty Images photo looks like Carlo is trying to crush a struggling Marchand into unconsciousness?

Goooood Morning!!!!
Still AM, right? Late night double (pimpin’ be hard), made extra special by a partner that skates like your Grandma and doesn’t call anything. He seemed to be watching when an offensive player took a slash on the hand, never noticed when slashed player circles and crosschecks slasher in the back. He asked me between periods what the penalties i called were about. Never made a call all night. It’s always fun when players ask about non calls right in front of your partner. Shoot me now, please!
Today is another day. I’m gonna make it a great one!!!!

Sounds like the ideal reffing partner:
“Why ya making calls? Just let ’em play. Old time hockey, like Eddie Shore! Is it time to go home yet? Whoops, I fell down.”

Sorry, we just sold our last one to some guy named ‘Bruce’. All we’ve got left is this one wearing a fish bowl.

Morning all.

Frost on the ground here this morning – that’s a sure sign it’s hockey season!

Summer was good but I’m ready to switch to the winter wardrobe now.

Couple of good games tonight as an appetiser for tomorrow.

Good that Killer is at least fit enough to operate a cash register! Small steps.
