Morning Free Association: No Nucks to Give

Wow, the Bruins are good again. I mean, we knew they were good but they haven’t always shown it, especially in parts of December and January. It turns out, they may have been mentally fatigued, something that Tuukka alluded to in a post-game interview.

The Bruins kept the Canucks to under four goals, like I said they should do in the game day thread write-up; I would say that 0 goals is significantly less than 4.

Speaking of 0 goals, our old frenemy No Goal almost made an appearance in the game during Charlie Coyle’s game winning sequence. After he scored, the Canucks bench boss, Travis Green, challenged for offsides. The officials took almost 2 minutes to examine it. Jack and Brick were convinced that the goal was coming back. Then something miraculous happened: it was declared a good goal.

Really, it was a masterful effort. Kuraly was skating back to tag up while McAvoy dragged his back foot long enough to make the play onside.

The Bruins then proceeded to score about every twenty minutes after. With goals from Brad Marchand, David Krejci, and a PPG from Karson Kuhlman.

Hooray goals!

Of course, with the Bruins winning, it didn’t stop the Canucks from trying. Unfortunately, Jay Beagle got too close to Tuukka, making Cheeks mad at him! Like he was shouting, “Only I get to shove Tuukka awkwardly into the net!”

Speaking of Tuukka, he was excellent, calm, and collected. This was his 3rd shutout of the season and his 48th career shutout. Guys, Tuukka Rask is good.

Next up: the Blackhawks tonight on NBCSNPDQASAPOMGWTFBBQ at 8pm. Billy Jaffe recommends turning down the sound and turning up the radio.

And yes I’m really really fucking pissed about the thing and no I don’t want to talk about it.

Baseball. Red Sox traded an awesome player. Imagine the Bruins trading Bergeron.

Hey Pals!!
The offside – so, while McAvoy is in possession of the puck, the fact that he is not touching it until Kuraly has tagged up is the key. It’s a delayed offside for that split second the puck is in the zone and Kuraly with it. It is written in the good book! In the rules governing offside. Honest.

Ah, that makes sense. Good explanation!

I guess if Coyle wasn’t in possession that time he had it in his skates and a goal was chalked off, then McAvoy wasn’t in possession this time!

I’ve had it happen, but never so tight! Just imagine that the puck went ten feet further into the ‘nuck’s zone. Technically, McAvoy is still in possession as he propelled it in a desired direction (good book’s words, not mine) and no one else has taken possession….. it’s delayed offside. Same thing, but bam bam. Kudos to that linesman….

Tricky – I’ll have to pull out the book so I can grasp the nuance of the wording. Good awareness on the part of Chuckie and the striped folks involved.

That offsides thing was something. With Charlie being judged to have “given up possession” while he was delaying at the blue line. I’m counting that as a generous interpretation by Toronto.

The Bruins need to be better at respecting the blue line, because as much as I have contempt for the offside challenge, there’s about 25 of 31 teams who will make the challenge every time.

Is that the explanation they gave? I assumed the refs didn’t have access to the angle that showed it was offside (other angles I’ve seen you can’t tell whether Kuraly had tagged back or not).

Watching live in real time, I didn’t even celebrate the goal cos I was convinced the entry had been offside. Ah well, I’m not a ref!

That aside, a great effort against a decent team. Vancouver media moaning about a late hit by Grizz in the first period, and to be fair they have a point…

Happens all the time though I guess.
