Morning Free Association: Birthday Shutout

Last night was Tuukka Rask’s 33rd birthday. He didn’t get the night off but he did get a sweet birthday gift: a shutout. Well, he did work his ass off for it, so it wasn’t exactly given. But at least the team in front of him managed to score two big goals against a stingy Flyers goaltender, Carter Hart.

This shutout is Tuukka’s 5th of the year and 50th of his career. He stopped 36 shots.

This is probably the best save of the night.

Here’s another.

Basically, he was your typical brick wall.

In front of him, he had team that was surprisingly stouter than it should be without its usual second pairing. Charlie McAvoy led all defensemen in TOI, followed by his pair partner Zdeno Chara. Speaking of Chara, he performed the most awesome of stick lifts for the second time within a week.

It’s the beautiful game.

Bruce Cassidy wasn’t afraid to shake things up during the game. For this game, he started with Sean Kuraly on the third line LW. He moved him up to the second line with David Krejci and David Pastrnak, who slid down to the second line RW. They had a lot of speed and a little chemistry to build upon. We’ll have to see if this continues. I mean, Noel Acciari became a 20 goal scorer by playing on the second line.

The Bruins got goal support from Matt Grzelcyk (PPG) in the second and Patrice Bergeron from above the face-off circle in third.

The biggest factor in the game was probably the Bruins penalty kill. The Flyers power play has been potent at times, scoring 11 PPGs in 9 games prior to the Bruins game. The Bruins killed all 3 chances.

The B’s next face the Sabres in Buffalo on Friday night.

That’s pretty cool. I wonder if that’s the first time they met – these must have been filmed in 2019 sometime.

Hi all.

Solid performance last night, but Tuukka won us the game.

Speaking of Chara, he performed the most awesome of stick lifts for the second time within a week

Jack said in the commentary he needs to be careful he doesn’t get penalised for doing that too often, but there’s nothing in the rules about stick lifts is there? The other guy should hold onto his stick a bit tighter!

Yeah, that sounds like it’s just asking for a delay of game/interference rule change in the offseason.

Maybe Brad should lick the stick and shout “Mine!” before the opponent picks it up again.
