Morning Free Association: Torey Krug’s Media Day

On Tuesday, Torey Krug spoke with the media via video conference about many topics, including continuing the 2019-2020 NHL season and his contract situation.

Torey Krug, who is back in Michigan with his wife Melanie, daughter Saylor, and bulldog Fenway, says that while he has instructions and equipment to stay in shape and mimic game shifts, it’s not the same as being in the rink, skating, and playing hockey.

“Absolutely nothing,” Krug said of any off-ice work that resembles skating. “I’ll be honest with you and pretty blunt, the reality of it is even rollerblading — yeah, it mimics the motion — but you don’t get the build up of lactic acid and having to deal with your groin and hip motion when you’re digging into the ice and trying to stop and start and that’s a big part of it.

“Riding a Peloton or using a bike to mimic shift lengths, that all helps and it’s great, but there’s nothing you can do to prepare for the ins and outs of a shift and the physicality of it. Not only are you trying to mimic the skating motion, but there’s no way you can train for going into the corner with a guy who’s 6-foot-2, 210 pounds and trying to out-battle him and get the puck and skate away from him.

“There’s so many things that we can try to do as individuals, but the reality of it is there’s nothing that is going to get us as close as possible into playing shape unless we go into some sort of mini training camp once we get back to this thing.”

He also goes on to talk about how if and when the season continues, it would be hard to imagine a situation in which the next NHL season 2020-2021 doesn’t get delayed and shortened due to play well into the summer.

With the season being paused then extended, that also means that the start of the league’s new year, and the start of free agency, will also start at a later date. Krug, who is due to be a free agent at the end of this season, said that no talks have happened on his contract since the pause began.

Of course, with the pause and financial losses by every team, it’s very possible that the cap will not rise to the $84 million mark that had been floated about before the deadline, instead staying at $81. With that and the escrow uncertainty, negotiating contracts at this time is difficult.

Torey misses his teammates and realizes that this is a special group. He hopes they get to play for the Stanley Cup again this season. Even though the team apparently has a group chat of some kind, he’s missing his fellow players.

Hopefully, they get together sooner rather than later.

Your Richard E. Grant Fact of the Day:

Grant has a fascination with scent.
I suppose that this is not shocking, considering he has a perfume business.

In this clip from The Ellen Show, his co-star from Can You Ever Forgive Me discusses his love of scent, and how he would smell everything around him.

He takes a cue from the discussion to give hostess Ellen DeGenerous a sniff. “I will remember that always!” he jokes.

One of his favorite scents is Gardenia. His family had gardenias in their flower garden when he was a boy, and he has always treasured the scent.
He describes it in this 2013 interview by GQ magazine:

‘What is it about the Gardenia?’

‘Smells to me like the Holy Grail of scent – an inhalation of which never ceases to induce a sensory rush that’s sort of like an Ecstatic Orgasmatron’.

‘You sound like Austin Powers?’

‘I know. I’ve no shame! I read that smell is the shortest synaptic leap in the brain to our memory and every time I stick my nose into a Gardenia, I feel like I’m nine years old again and living in Africa. The five years ago I was at a friend’s wedding anniversary in Tuscany and danced with a woman whose neck brought me to a standstill, mid-boogie. ‘What perfume are you wearing?’. Fought to suppress an overwhelming impulse to lick her neck, like a preparatory vampire. She handed me a tiny half filled glass tube of perfume oil as surreptitiously as a drug deal, and said ‘It’s yours to keep’. And ‘drugged’ I surely was. The sexiest scent I had ever smelt and the closest approximation to trapping the elusive Gardenia-in-a-bottle I’d yet come across. I’d discovered that it’s one of the few flowers that’s proved impossible to extract naturally, so it’s always a chemical concoction. ‘Where can I buy this?’

My stranger laughed and said –‘A little store in Malibu’.

‘Coup de foudre’ – aka ‘Love at first sight’ or in my case ‘smell’, seriously wobbled my marriage vows that night as I struggled to separate the scent from the stranger who now seemed an earthly Aphrodite.

Hello folks!

Just got back from a three-hour trip to the supermarket and now I know what hell is like.

Too many people, not enough stock, too long a shopping list and a much-longer-than-necessary fire alarm test!

Each repetition began with “THIS IS A TEST…” and I was thinking, you’re damn right it’s a test! (Of patience, nerves, self restraint…)

Good Morning!!
Lors of rain today…. Probably boating tomorrow.
A few years ago, i transplanted some ramps into a wet, shady place in my garden. I never pick them… When they come up, it’s time to go to my secret spot and pick there. They finally came up, yesterday!!! Woo hoo!!

Morning all. I’ve been enjoying the former players live tweeting NESN’s Cup Run replay. Nice trip down memory lane.
