Morning Free Association: More Skating

For a little over 2 weeks, the NHL has been in Phase 2 of it’s plan to re-open the league. At first, the league was only allowing a small amount of players to skate with each other in small practice groups. For the Bruins, that meant Brad and Bergy, then Chara with Moore and Lindholm. Torey Krug, Matt Grzelcyk, and Sean Kuraly joined the two top liners last week. As of today, both groups of players could get together to practice as the NHL allows for additional players to skate together.

But what about the goalies? Tuukka Rask spoke with kids yesterday via Zoom. Before answering questions, he had indicated that he hasn’t been skating due to ice availability and that he hoped to get back to it soon. Tuukka said that he had just been tested again and hoped the test would return a negative result. The way he said it seemed like he had been tested before with different results.

Was Tuukka the one who was asymptomatic but tested positive? Maybe. Or maybe he just worded his answer awkwardly, making those who take things way too literally at times (me) to read more into than needed. If he tested positive or not, it’s not for us to know unless he wants us to.

Training camp begins in 10 days.

Hot down here too.
I don’t know the temp, but my dehumidifier is barely keeping up.

I heard that somewhere inside the arctic circle reached 100 the other day, but global warming is almost as big a hoax as coronavirus!

Yeah, I saw that. Crazy!

Our thermometer read 43C earlier today, but the sensor may have been in the sun …

Hi folks,

It certainly makes it hard that one thing no-one knows is what percentage of people with Covid are asymptomatic. On the cruise ship that was one of the early hotspots they tested everyone on board, and of those who tested positive, half showed no symptoms. Until we’re in a position for mass testing, we won;t be any the wiser.

Sonia is back in the office for the first time today. She rode there on her bike (about four miles), the other option being the bus, which she’s not prepared to risk yet. I don’t blame her. That leaves me to juggle work, childcare and birdcare!

Massachusetts has been trying something close to mass testing (I guess by definition, it’s Mass testing…) They’re doing >9000 tests per day on a population of ~6,000,000 residents (it’s probably only reached ~800,000 unique individuals) combined with contact tracing to prioritize who gets tested, and the infection rate has been dropping.
My town probably peaked at ~280 confirmed cases and now is down to 35 confirmed cases.

I’m not sure what the bottleneck is wrt testing here – we’re the medical hub of the region so we’ve got capacity to process ~30,000 tests/day, yet the testing rate has been climbing comparatively slowly.

Ask not what your cow can do for you but what you can do for your cow in the basement.
