Morning Free Association: On to Phase 3

Late Friday, the NHL announced that the CBA extension through 2025-2026 was ratified by the players and the NHL. The players voted 78% for, 22% against while the owners unanimously voted for it. With a simple majority of each it would pass. Apparently the new labor agreement entails a return to Olympic play among other things but ensures some real austerity is coming to the NHL and especially to its players. We’ll discuss that further this week.

As had been stated before, the two hub cities will be Toronto for the Eastern Conference and Edmonton for the Western. We even know what hotels are being used for the “Secure Zone”.

Along with the CBA and the work agreement in place for this postseason, The NHL released new important dates for the start of Phase 3 and Phase 4.

All Sorts of Dates:

7/13 (today!) Training camps reopen
7/26 Teams travel to host city (East: Toronto, West: Edmonton)
7/28-7/29 Exhibition games (1 per team)

8/1 Stanley Cup Qualifiers Begin
8/10 Draft Lottery!
8/11 First Round Begins
8/25 Second Round Begins

9/8 Conference Finals Begin
9/22 Stanley Cup Final Begins

10/4 Last Possible Day for Stanley Cup Final
10/9-10 NHL Draft to be held virtually

Now, I know that seems like a lot of stuff crammed into a short amount of time. The NHL wants to wrap things up quickly for teams amid continuing risk of COVID infection. All players will have August 10th off due to the NHL wanting the Draft Lottery to be the headliner that day. You remember, the number one overall draft pick will go to a team that is still playing in the qualifiers while teams that have performed far worse will select after.

With the Bruins starting Phase 3 tomorrow, they released their 30 skater roster on Friday night. There is little surprise as to whom is on it.

Now, obviously, there is a name who is missing on the roster: Steven Kampfer. Kampfer decided it was best for him and his family if he opted out. Both his wife and son have congenital heart defects and it’s best to minimize their risk of infection.

Who could blame him? Even if he decided on his own behalf, for his own health, it would be totally acceptable. This time of The Rona is completely scary.

He’s not the only NHL player who has opted out. So far, 7 players are exercising their option for the postseason: Travis Hamonic (Calgary Flames), Sven Beartschi (Canucks), Karl Alzner (Canadiens), Mike Green (Oilers), Zach Trotman (Penguins), and Roman Polak (Stars) all have opted out. Polak’s situation is slightly different than the others; he already stated he wouldn’t return for the postseason and while he is a pending NHL UFA, he’s already signed a deal with a club in the Czech Republic for next season. Max Domi has notified the Habs that he intends to take 7-10 days to decide whether or not he’ll return for the postseason. Domi is at elevated risk due to his diagnosis of Type-1 Diabetes.

Game dates for the first round and qualifiers are live. The Bruins begin their slate of round robin games on August 2nd, all times are TBD.

Dates:

8/2 (TBD) Flyers at Bruins
8/5 (TBD) Lightning at Bruins
8/8 (TBD) Bruins at Capitals

Presumably, all these games along with other qualifier games will be broadcast on TV.

In fact, there is some word on how broadcasts will be handled, with some broadcast teams being on-site. Here’s what we know now, with more info to come:

There’s no word on whether or not fan sounds will be piped in for ambience or over the broadcast to make games sound normal. However, it seems that the New York Rangers emailed some requests to their fans to make some noise for potential use.

Apparently, Bruins season ticket holders received an email requesting certain media for broadcast, social media, and possibly in game sound.

Bruins fans were asked to chant “TUUUUUUUUKKKKKKK,” for when goalie Tuukka Rask makes a save. They were also asked for a 30-second video of “how you’d dance to ‘Shipping Up to Boston,'” the Dropkick Murphys’ song heard at home games, although they were told not to sing the song or play it in the background. Bruins fans were also asked for 30 seconds of “booing or reacting to a bad call,” with the explicit instruction not to use any “bad words/hand gestures, please.”

Re: curse words: They know us too well!

Lastly, the NHL does not want to abandon their myriad awards. While the winners will be announced some time during the Conference Finals round, the award finalists will be announced in the coming days.

I’m sure we’ll have a Bruin or Tuu(kka) in there.

I momentarily don’t hate them.

But I still hate the porn-stasche.

Hmmm…. 5 or 6 games/day. Since they are being played in only 2 rinks, we know that the in-conference games will be sequential – so at least one game will need to start early, but we’re talking about 9-12 hours start-to-finish, with time in-between to resurface the ice nice & pretty, and to sanitize the locker rooms, the benches, etc.
Obviously ~2 games will overlap between the two conferences- the later 2 Eastern games will overlap with the first two Western games of each night.

Midday, 4pm & 8pm start times maybe?

European games seem to take less time to complete than NHL. I think they have a shorter break between periods and probably fewer TV time-outs, so that’s probably not an option, I guess?

I’ve been meaning to ask: does anyone else watch “Dexter”, the Showtime series? Jo and I are hooked.

Morning all. Had a dream last night I was part of an organizing committee putting on a big public rewatch of the 2011 Cup Final. Seemed like my job was to just stand there with an IPad and hit “start.” I is very important person.

It’s hard to get to the final unless you hit start!

Hi folks.

Ooh, it’s getting close. If the SCF is possibly in early October I wonder when next season will start – and how many games it will be.

I hope these games won’t all be blackouts for me. If there’s lots of matinees then there’s some hope… Hopefully my dodgy streaming site is still up and running – haven’t needed it for a while!

Nice walk to the pub yesterday evening, our first outing since lockdown began. Good social distancing in operation but it was a shame to see the place so quiet on a glorious sunny Sunday evening. Hopefully these places are making enough money to keep ticking over.

Nice to chat Saturday night. I find it quite therapeutic. Increased family time is definitely a positive side effect of lockdown but it’s good to talk to people you don’t see all day every day!

We tried to watch Blindspotting, but it’s not part of Prime for us. It did direct us to a comedy called Game Night though, which I can recommend!

We haven’t been to a pub yet. There is some outdoor and some indoor seating at our favorite. We plan to darken their door soon!

Glad you two were able to get out and about for a bit!

I’ll have to check out Game Night. Bummer about Blindspotting. Hopefully it becomes available over there. Definitely one of those movies that leaves you thinking about it and the issues it tackles.

Good Monday Morning!!!! Lots of exciting news here!! It still seems weird (even in this crazy year!) to be gearing up for playoff hockey in July.
It had to be tough for those who opted out or may still not out of these playoffs. Safety first!!
I think ” Safety Dance” might be the song of the year!! Maybe for every year to come
No crazy animal stories from Monrovia this week, although a groundhog has moved into the retaining wall between our yard and the neighbors, so that’s pretty exciting. yay
