Morning Free Association: Torey Krug and the Impending Free Agency

Torey Krug will be a free agent once the season is officially over sometime in October. Not having a contract locked up before the pause has certainly placed a lot of pressure on both the Bruins and on Krug. In the Beforetimes, the NHL salary cap was projected to be at least $84.5 million next season. After the league shutdown due to the coronavirus pandemic, the salary cap will remain flat at $81.5 million and will only increase by $1 million the following season. That limited salary cap space will affect how the Bruins will handle contracts, including an offer for Torey Krug.

Both sides have not talked about a contract offer in quite some time. Krug admitted that he hadn’t heard anything in a while earlier in the spring. Done Sweeney had acknowledged that he wanted to get a deal done that works for both parties. Now, it seems that Krug has set a deadline saying that he doesn’t want to deal with contract talks once he travels to Toronto with the team on July 26th.

As a result, Krug has to prepare for the unknown.

Krug obviously wants to stay in Boston–he has said this many times–but he has to do what’s best for him. He has many things to consider now that his family has grown; his daughter Saylor just turned one last month. So, his decisions aren’t just about money. Another consideration for him is whether or not he would be part of the leadership group no matter where he ends up.

From Conor Ryan of the Boston Sports Journal (sorry, paywall)

“Any time you’re winning and you’re doing your job well, that makes everything else kind of line up in your life,” Krug said. “Right now, family is the number one thing and my priorities have changed quite a bit. Having to be a husband and be a father, it’s quite a different change in where your priorities lie,” Krug said. “You have to think about schools, you have to think about quality of life, living in certain climates — these are all some things that you take into consideration and we’ll see but I think at the end of the day, competing and being part of a core leadership group has all been important to me and try to build something and be apart of something special, you always want to do that.

“There’s a lot of things that go into it. But right now, I’m just focused on this group right here and now and hopefully helping us win a championship and I’ll have to prepare for whatever’s to come after that.”

Torey already has that here sans the “A” or “C” on his sweater.

The full interview is here for your viewing pleasure:

The Bruins released the times for their first three games in Toronto.  The first one against Columbus will be their only exhibition game as a tuneup before the round robin. Now, we only need a time for the game against the Caps.

Word is that NESN will get some, if not all of these games.

Morning all.

Dumpling food truck was supposed to be in town yesterday but they cancelled due to the weather. I am sad and dumplingless.

Also the Waitsfield Select Board decided to not make masks mandatory in public places so that’s fun.

My attempt to reply to this turned into a 1/2 hour laptop update from hell.

A friend who has a good truck has decided to skip this summer, worrying about start up costs and half full venues due to social distancing.

D’oh! Stupid weather.

I really miss Friday jaunts to the street food market. I’d kill for an Ethiopian platter!

Good Morning!!
Was up in the hill country yesterday. Really need Jo’s house to sell!!! Building a house with chump change is slow and laborious!
Losing Krug after the season is a real concern. Hopefully, Sweenius finds the dough. He’s become a better defender and on the “O” side, we all know what he brings to the game!!

Ugh. Krug is one of my favorites. I think the pandemic is going to cost us #47 I don’t see where the money comes from, and I don’t think he takes much of a home-town discount – he’s not natively from around here, his kid is too young to be locked into a school system, and he has consistently expressed interest in getting fair market $$

Yeah, I’d love it if Sweeney can Sweenius but the logical side of me is already letting go of Krug.
