Morning Free Association: Record Ninth Nomination

Let’s start off the day with some great news: Patrice Bergeron. That’s it, that’s the great news.

Okay, more: Patrice Bergeron has been nominated for the Selke Trophy for a record ninth straight season.

Always so humble, that Patrice. Bergeron is nominated along with Sean Couturier (Philadelphia) and Ryan O’Reilly (St. Louis). Odds are on Couturier to win, becoming just the third Flyers forward to win. However, if Bergy should win, he’ll break the tie he has with Bob Gainey with the most wins (4), his fifth being a new record. We’re so lucky to have him.

By the way, Patrice will turn 35 in 3 days.

I’m giving you a break from the COVID stuff today; we’ll talk more about it tomorrow.

I would love to see Bergy break the Selke trophy tie with Gainey and be recognized as the best two-way forward of his generation. It feels like the PHWA wants to spread the awards around – “Bergy has won more than once, lets not vote for him again. I hear that Goon Thugworthy has excellent defensive stats…”

I think Hellebuyck gets the Vezina for the same reason.

You’re probably right. I think that sentiment runs through all sports and entertainment. If you deserve it, you should get it. That said, I think Bergy would be happiest with a Cup, as LB pointed out.

Fingers crossed for Bergy, but never mind the Selke, lets get him another Cup or two!

Good Morning!
9 straight nominations, wow! I hope he does win. So deserving! So glad we have Bergy on this team!! If a team has the best record in the league, somebody ought to get a trophy(not one of those “you participated” ones, either).
Driving to Boston tomorrow. I’m moving some furniture for my peeps. They found an apartment near whatever hospital is treating hubby. He’s not worth fixing. I’m recommending euthanasia.
