Morning Free Association: Game Day Delayed

If you tuned into NESN or NBCSNPDQ+ last night around 8pm expecting to see the start of the first game in the Carolina Hurricanes and Boston Bruins, you would have been surprised to find that no such game was on at that time. Instead, you would have seen the 3rd or 4th overtime in the first game between the Columbus Blue Jackets and Tampa Bay Lightning. It went into 5 overtimes before the match would be resolved.

At 8:47pm, the NHL officially postponed the Canes-Bruins game until Wednesday morning.

Even though the NHL had reserved the right to start games as late as 11pm, the arena hygiene staff usually have 2-3 hours to sanitize the benches and the dressing rooms prior to the next batch of teams entering. The game finally ended at 9:22pm after 6 hours and 13 minutes had elapsed between start to finish.

Bruce Cassidy still had media availability at 9:45pm, during which he admitted that he had a slice of pizza while waiting on the other game to wrap up.

He addressed the ice situation stating in his opinion that the ice would probably be in poor condition after the 8 periods of hockey and that it wouldn’t be a big deal to have a back-to-back since there was no travel involved and the other game was more than 24 hours after the first.

So, here we are. Game 1 between the Hurricanes and Bruins is today at 11am. Game 2 is tomorrow night at 8pm, barring any unusual circumstances.

I like seeing the off-the-glass clearing attempt actually go through the neutral zone rather than over the glass. Sorry, Quaider (not sorry)
