Morning Free Association: Kuhlman Signs

Yesterday, the Boston Bruins announced that they signed forward Karson Kuhlman to a two-year deal.

Kuhlman was one of the four remaining RFAs that the Bruins had yet to sign, the others being Jake DeBrusk, Zach Senyshyn, and Peter Cehlarik. His deal looks to be a two-year, one-way deal with a AAV of $725,000.

Kuhlman deal

With this signing, it looks like the B’s have about $6,657,686 in cap space, which is not a lot. Sure, if Senyshyn and Cehlarik get deal similar to Kuhlman, that leaves about $4.5M left to sign DeBrusk and Zdeno Chara, if Sweeney is indeed serious about re-signing the 20-year NHL veteran.

Former Bruin Joe Thornton ‘s time with the San Jose Sharks is over. Both sides knew that their time was up when Thornton was offered up at the 2020 trade deadline and no suitable offers came in. So, Thornton decided to move on to a contender…by signing with the Toronto Maple Leafs last week. He said he wanted to win the Stanley Cup, which makes that move all the more quizzical. Before leaving the Sharks, Thornton got some advice from a longtime Bay Area sports star: Joe Montana.

“I actually talked to Joe Montana. I think Joe gave me some good advice. He just talked about leaving San Francisco and going to Kansas City,” said Thornton, who signed a one-year deal with the Leafs on Friday.

In 1993, Montana requested a trade from the 49ers, who shipped the 37-year-old quarterback to Kansas City, where he finished his career with the Chiefs.

“I had so many people I talked to over the last week. I’m just blessed I had a chance to talk to some great people. He was one guy who offered me some good advice,” Thornton said.

Jumbo did not elaborate on what that advice was. Two years after winning his fourth and last Super Bowl, Montana was traded to the Kansas City Chiefs, where he played out his final two seasons in the NFL. In his penultimate season, Montana carried the team on his back to the AFC Championship only to fall to the Bills. His next and last season was not as successful, losing in the first round. Montana continues to live between his Bay Area home and Malibu since he retired.

How do I know so much about this? Because Joe Montana is my favorite football player of all time. I just couldn’t pass up on this opportunity to share a story linked to him.

Will Joe Thornton be the missing piece to the Maple Leafs Stanley Cup puzzle? Or will he be just another piece that doesn’t fit right, being a flat edge border when it’s a middle piece that’s missing?

Did a successful video chat with Ian, my youngest, last night. I was fireside here, he was fireside in his backyard in Connecticut. Woo hoo! I’m starting to walk upright!

So I’m thinking that the cap is a little more manageable – I don’t see Cehlarik & Senyshyn getting one-way deals and probably they don’t make the roster – so their cap hits will be closer to ~$200k each than $700k. I’d be shocked if Chara got offered more than $2m, leaving about $4+M for DeBrusk (Paul Carey has a $700k/$375k deal, so maybe we should expect that?)

Maybe Z takes even less money. I would like to see him in black and gold.next season

I think both Jumbo Joe and Pat Marleau are on league minimum deals. Z does seem to have a little more in the tank than either of them though.

Windows 10? My work laptop needed an update a couple of weeks ago which luckily I waited until after work, because it took four hours!

Yup, the dreaded Windows 10 update! I made the fatal error of closing the laptop when I went to go take a shower. When I opened the laptop again it started the update. Damn you sneaky Windows!!

Hi folks. I like the Kuhlman signing. Hopefully he’s more fortunate with injuries over the next two years.

I kinda feel like Cehlarik has had his chances to shine with the big club and never quite grabbed them. I was thinking he might be let go. We’ll see.

I was quite surprised how cheaply Thornton was signed. Has he gone over a cliff the last couple of seasons? Last I remember of him he was leading the league in assists! I guess at his age it only goes one way (oh to be his age!!)

I think that Cehlarik, Senyshen, & DeBrusk all got qualifying offers so there is at least some interest in bringing them back. (Sherman, Gaunce & Brett Ritchie did not get QOs)

Ah, thanks – didn’t know that. Wonder what the hold up with Debrusk is. Haggling over money?

Thornton is still an effective power play guy, and his hands are still magic, but old grey beard has no legs anymore

Good Morning!!
Got busy early yesterday and never associated! Good progress made. Staying to work today!
So, Cehlarik probably nets $750K, but does Senyshyn? We’ve seen Peter contribute a bit (screw those last names), but Zach? Oh well, Donnie will figure it out.
