Morning Free Association: Greatest Hockey Names Bracket

With all the news about the will-they-or-won’t-they with regards to the NHL, NHLPA, and the season, I had little time for this fun thing. Last week, Greg Wyshynski of ESPN created a bracket of the best NHL names ad it might be fun to determine which names would advance and win.

The bracket is sorted into divisions to make things make more sense:

Old-School Region

Modern North American Region

Modern International Region

Actual Objects Region

All but one of the players has played in the NHL; the sole holdout is a highly regarded prospect who will make the NHL soon.

Here’s the breakdown just in case you can’t see the tiny writing in the bracket.

Old-School Region

1 Bronco Horvath vs. 16 Ebbie Goodfellow
2 Zarley Zalapski vs. 15 Dave Snuggerud
3 Sprague Cleghorn vs. 14 Merlin Malinowski
4 Parris Duffus vs. 13 Dino Ciccarelli
5. Uwe Krupp vs. 12 Frank McCool
6 Jeff Beukeboom vs. 11 Daren Puppa
7 Zigmund Palffy vs. 10 Larry Playfair
8 Guy LaFleur vs. 9 Stu Grimson

Modern North American Region

1 Cal Clutterbuck vs. 16 Pierre-Luc Letourneau-Leblond
2 Barclay Goodrow vs. 15 Vincent Lecavalier
3 Greg McKegg vs. 14 Kevin Shattenkirk
4. Slater Koekkoek vs. 13 Boone Jenner
5 Marc-Andre Cliché vs. 12 Dustin Byfuglien
6 Jean-Luc Grand-Pierre vs. 11 Justin Abdelkader
7 Rob Klinkhammer vs. 10 Jonathan Cheechoo
8 Guillaume Latendresse vs. 9 Derek Boogaard

Modern International Region

1 Miroslav Satan vs. 16 Kaspars Daugavins
2 Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen vs. 15 Nail Yakupov
3 Jyrki Jokipakka vs. 14 Ilya Kovalchuk
4 Nino Niederreiter vs. 13 Radko Gudas
5 Kaapo Kakko vs. 12 Niklas Hjalmarsson
6 Radek Bonk vs. 11 Teuvo Teravainen
7 Zemgus Girgensons vs. 10 Pekka Rinne
8 Tuukka Rask vs. 9 Jaromir Jagr

Actual Objects Region

Morning all. I vote Otto. Am I doing this right?

Despite having no physical or mental energy I did manage to clean my apartment yesterday. Yay!

I spent much of the last 2-1/2 days sorting through piles of stuff that needed filing and cleaning up my office. It all paid off this morning when I found my most recent bank statement, and simply leaned over, opened the file cabinet drawer with a sticky-note that said “Bank Records”, and slid the paper neatly into the front of the folder for that bank.

I’ve still got a pile of old receipts on my floor to sort through. I found lots of fun stuff in it
Some receipts from Caldor (a department store chain that disappeared in the early 90s), a restaurant receipt from our wedding party eve dinner, and a recall notice for the fuel cap on my leaf blower (which I was just telling my neighbor about the time I got mild chemical burns on my back from a poorly affixed gas cap – clearly I should NOT have ignored that recall notice lol )

Caldor…. Wow! It been awhile since i heard that name. There’s an old one in Waterbury, CT that is still vacant. So, do you remember Ames? They gave free replacements of plastic rakes, if you brought the broken one in. I wonder why they didn’t make it.

Ha – trying to pretend they were Sears — but Craftsman never made plastic tools!

I remember Ames – they bought out Zayre! and somehow managed to have lower quality wares.

So I guess Jagorim Jarg lost out in a preliminary round?

“Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen” – there’s a name picked out by indecisive parents.

“So, my mulkvisti, we really need to choose: Ukko or Pekka?”
“Let’s take both. We need more ‘K’s!”

Hi Pals!
I wasn’t able to chime in Friday, but managed to read the MFA later as i have FOMOB2B! No to Patches. Just no.
I can give you my four finalists right now: Garth Butcher (probably my winner), Hakan Loob (barely over Darren Rumble), Radek Bonk, and Cal Clutterbuck (he in the toughest division to call). My choices may change without notice!

Ooops, Butcher and Loob are in the same bracket (fraud in the election!) so i’ll keep Butcher and add Jeff Beukaboom.

Morning,

I bet Frank McCool never got his ID accepted when he was 21.

Ziggy the budgie often gets referred to as Zigmund, after Zigmund Palffy. The Z is soft, as in “pleasure”. This annoys Leah…

So the other week I mentioned I had bought everything I wanted during lockdown. Then the other day I got a message from my phone service provider saying my contract was up and I had the option to get a new phone. Thinking about it I realised my phone has become annoyingly slow recently, the memory is full, the selfie camera doesn’t work and the headphone socket is a bit dodgy.

So I got a new one! Messaged the family – “send me £20, I’ll wrap up the phone and open it for Xmas.” Sorted!

Got a message from the delivery company this morning that it would arrive between 10.16am and 2.16pm. That seemed oddly specific considering they were giving themselves a four-hour window. Guess what time it turned up?

10.14!!

I’ve been getting packages slightly early lately – a nice change from this summer when packaged would be scheduled to arrive sometime between next week and next month.
I guess all of the delivery services had to up their game in time for the election and then the holiday season.

I’m still amused by the time I ordered 3 pairs of socks, and one of the pairs went on a road trip around Michigan (because ZIP codes – how do they work?)

That’s good point – in the spring and summer deliveries were taking ages.

Just ONE of the pairs of socks went walkabout? lol

Meanwhile, a large package of paperwork that I sent to South Carolina for the boss is missing….. sent on November 25th. Now I can’t find the tracking number/ receipt thingy. Crap.

I still laugh at the time the package showed up and then an hour later I got an email from the company telling me the package had shipped.
