Morning Free Association: Let’s Talk About the Expansion Draft

So much stuff happened in the NHL yesterday. Just kidding. Anyway, I had this in my pocket for a bit for this time when things are still moving slowly.

In June of sometime next year, the Seattle Kraken will have their pick of unprotected players from each of the other 31 teams in the latest occurrence of an expansion draft. It’ll be fun to see who Seattle GM Ron Francis selects from each team and to see if there will be some deals to take certain players plus draft picks to avoid taking other non-exempt but valuable players. As for the Bruins, there are some players who are more valuable than not.

As we noted sometime before, Don Sweeney is opting to protect 7 forwards, 3 defensemen, and 1 goalie. Anyone with a no movement clause (NMC) must be protected. Anyone with under 3 years as a pro is exempt. So, it’s the players in between that are at risk of moving on. So, let’s get to it!

Who should be protected?

Forwards:

Patrice Bergeron (NMC), Brad Marchand (NMC), Charlie Coyle (NMC), David Pastrnak, Jake DeBrusk, Ondrej Kase, Craig Smith

Defensemen: Charlie McAvoy, Brandon Carlo, Matt Grzelcyk

Goalie: ?

As of right now, Tuukka Rask will be a UFA at the end of the season. Should he be re-signed, he will be protected. Jaroslav Halak will be a UFA at the end of the season as well. Should neither of these two remain, Dan Vladar would have to be protected.

Exempt Players:

Don’t worry, Jack Studnicka isn’t going anywhere. He’s exempt. So is Urho Vaakanainen. That’s handy because after spending so much time learning how to spell his name, I would hate for him to leave through a expansion draft. Goalie Jeremy Swayman also is exempt. Basically all unsigned prospects are not subject to this draft unless their rights are traded to Seattle.

Unprotected Players:

Anders Bjork, Chris Wagner, Nick Ritchie, Trent Frederic, Connor Clifton, Jeremy Lauzon, Jakub Zboril, John Moore

Were I the Kraken, I would be very interested in Connor Clifton. His term will only be 2 years after this season at $1 million per each. Or maybe John Moore, who needs to be in a place where he can crack the lineup.

Good Morning!!
Made the trek back to Monrovia early this morn. The carpenter is back! He brings a kick ass helper lately and they get things done! I was getting despondent about my slow progress, but these guys have put the pedal to the metal again.
If i was Ron Francis, i’d be rich and famous. I’d also have a very enjoyable task pilfering 31 rosters. Clifton, Frederic, and Zboril would be the most interesting players to me. Clifton has big league experience. Zboril probably more upside. Frederic may be the guy, depending on what is needed.

I was very briefly a carpenter’s helper. Was the first job I really enjoyed doing. Maybe I’d have gone down that route if I hadn’t been so lucky with the sport stuff.

Morning all,

Hmmm, the re-signing of Tuukka is going to be a saga isn’t it? Not looking forward to that one.

Busy day today. Later I have to speak to a guy named Barry Orr. Guaranteed I’m going to call him Bobby ..

Ha! I did that with a client a bunch of years ago. Her name was similar to a baseball player’s. So I called her the baseball player’s name!

So easily done.

Barry has emailed me the info I needed – no need to call him. Embarrassment avoided!

Oh, very good, sir. lol

He was actually giving me some info on betting on the US election. £1.69 billion won and lost on that one, folks!

That election was pretty much a 6 – 5 pick ’em.
