Morning Free Association: Surprise Retirements

Yesterday, I awoke to a Twitter notification that a NHL player retired. Later in the day, it was another announcement that really made me sad.

First, Alexander Steen, forward for the St. Louis Blues, has retired after a 15-season NHL career. Although he was preparing for the upcoming season doctor determined that he has multiple degenerative herniated discs. He originally was sidelined from all but 9 playoff games in the bubble after sustaining a back injury. As it turns out, it was much more serious. The 36 year old Steen played in 1,078 regular season games with both the Toronto Maple Leafs and the St. Louis Blues. He also played in 91 playoff games with the Blues, eventually winning the Stanley Cup in 2019.

A much bigger surprise came a few hours later when fellow Swede, Henrik Lundqvist wrote an Instagram post about his own health issue that will prevent him from playing in 2021.

Heart arrhythmia is a super serious matter and I’m glad that he has a medical team that spotted it and advised him against playing because it’s just not worth it. The King is 38 years old and is coming off a trying year with the Rangers during which he was replaced as the primary goaltender and subsequently bought out. For this season, he signed a one-year deal with the Washington Capitals for $1.5 million.

Good news for the Caps, they have an additional $1.5 million cap space! The bad news, they need to find a new goalie. Maybe we’ll see Lundqvist in 2021-22 when he’s the new goalie for the Seattle Kraken.

Boomer got some hard show experience yesterday. He had to go out shortly after the snow stopped, and went galumphing through the shortest path possible to his favorite pooping spot, and went, squatting in the snow. So after cleaning that up, I got a shovel and cleared the path to that area.
Unfortunately, the path he chose, while plenty spacious for a bulldog, was through the trees, and most definitely NOT tall enough for an adult human. I’ve smacked my head on an overhanging branch 3x over the last day.

He’s not the only one discomforted by the snow. I had a FedEx package due yesterday. When I got up, I took a look to see if it was on schedule, and it said “On Truck For Delivery” as of 4:30 AM.
During a crippling snowstorm.
And my long, hilly driveway was not properly cleared.

There have been no updates in the 30 hours since then. I wonder if the driver is ok…

Your driveway is steeper than it looks at first glance. You could easily lose an unwary driver!

The GC on this railing job went over the edge of that nightmare driveway yesterday. It took two trucks to pull him out. Driveway is 1/4 mile of twisty, turny road on a wooded hill. I’m not going back til monday

Morning all. Very pretty walk this morning with the snow and clear blue skies. Looked like I was walking in a damn Vermont postcard! lol

Poor Nugget did not like the noise of the snow plows. She was not a happy kitty yesterday.

Slept hard last night but still feel like I could use about 583 more hours of sleep.

Hi Pals!
Was very late yesterday so I want to reaffirm my desire to see Miller back in the line up. He can provide some of the toughness that the Bruins need. They have been pushed around some in the last couple playoffs. His skating had improved significantly before his injury. Can he get back there? I don’t know, but the dude is a warrior and will make every effort to play.
I’m not a big Hank fan, but I feel for the guy. He finally landed on a team with a legit chance to win and….. crap. Steen has had a good career and won a Cup, so I just hope he doesn’t have a lot of pain and can enjoy retirement.
Finally got down with my new snowblower – it’s a beast! Had to wait a year for a big snowfall and was pleased with how well it did. A lady from down the street was walking her dog and whined about her sidewalk not getting cleared (she pays somebody). So ooo, I did hers, saw the next sidewalk wasn’t cleared…. lots of fun. We will take it north this weekend as Monrovia received about two feet of snowy goodness.
