I hope that you’ve gotten used to the idea of a younger skewing defense because you as Bruins fans will be getting that in the new year. The final piece of the defensive puzzle that was Zdeno Chara has landed in a different place on a different team. After 15 years with the Boston Bruins as their captain, Chara has signed a one-year contract with the Washington Capitals.

His deal with the Caps is worth up to $1.525 million with performances bonuses: $230,000 for 10 games played, $250,000 if the team makes the playoffs, $250,000 if the team wins the Stanley Cup. His cap hit is only $795,000.

There were reports that the Bruins had a contract on the table worth $1.5 million for one year. I cannot officially substantiate that. It doesn’t seem like it was a money issue but more of a playing time and pairing one. Don Sweeney had hinted at needing to determine where Chara fit in the pairing lineup at his age and that he would have to accept some hard truths about playing time. But who knows if that was even true? I simply don’t trust Don Sweeney or Cam Neely when they say that they’ve been negotiating with a player, or that a contract was offered and on the table, or that they really want a player back. You know who they wanted back? Chris Wagner (for 3 years) and Kevan Miller at more than league minimum. And he’s held together with wishes and dreams, duct tape, and leftover goalie netting. When Sweeney wants a player, he signs them early.

In his Instagram post, Chara said that Sweeney decided to go with their younger players and that he respected that decision. His agent claims that the Bruins have been clear the whole time that talks were ongoing.

But, it seems that Sweeney and Neely to some extent weren’t honest to the media and fans. Do we deserve that? I would hope we would.

It’s one thing when I say I distrust Sweeney, it’s entirely another when Ty Anderson says it.

While it does appear that the Bruins indeed have no plan and are just winging it with the young draft picks who’ve yet to crack the lineup, NBC Sports is reporting that that the B’s are interested in left shot defenseman Ben Hutton, who last played for the Los Angeles Kings. I don’t have high hopes that they’ll actually sign him or that he’ll be any better than the unprovens.

One thing that can’t be replaced is the leadership void that Chara’s absence will leave. Sure, Patrice Bergeron has learned a bunch from Zee, as David Krejci has as well, but other team mates will have to step up more. Patrice deserves the captaincy but I somehow doubt that he’ll be officially declared as such this season. after this season he only has one more year remaining on his contract.

Sigh. I’m glad that I became a fan at a point where I could still appreciate Zdeno Chara while he was captain of the Bruins. The way that it ended seems awful and empty; the fact they failed to win the cup in Game 7 in 2019 with him coming back from a broken jaw days before is downright criminal.

Here’s to seeing him show he’s still got it against the Bruins 7 times this year!

Sorry guys, I’m not really positive about things right now. 2020 took a lot out of me as I’m sure it did you. Thanks for being here and making it better.

One positive thing is that my “n” key started spontaneously working again. It was only a matter or time.

Good Morning! I’m disappointed that Big Zee will finish his career elsewhere. I guess i can be happy that my brother (lives in northern VA, huge Caps fan) gets to see day to day Zee. I think that’s needed to fully appreciate the big guy. It will be interesting to see how Ovie and Big Zee get along.

So, yesterday was my birthday, as LB noted. I was working early as the carpenters showed up long before i was ready. I did review the day’s content later and quaffed a delightful concoction in honor of our shared birthday and in your (LB) honor, sir. Jo and i had a campfire for awhile, with a couple impromptu local visitors. All in all, in bed by 8:30, and out cold before long. Something about the air up here. Hoping to kayak on NYD. Lots of boaters do. Best way to start the year, eh?

There’s a NYD tradition in London of going to swim in the Serpentine, which is like a small lake in Hyde Park. I’ve never joined in and never plan to, but I’m sure it’s a refreshing way to start the year!

I’m sad, but not really surprised about big-Z. If it didn’t get done weeks ago, it was hard to still expect him to sign. I’m glad to hear that they were more explicit with Z’s agent than they were with Krug’s.

It’s not unreasonable to expect them to move on from a player in his forties – I think Z is literally the oldest player in the league – but they don’t have a credible left side defense (Grizz, Moore, Lauzon, Urho, or an off-handed Cliffy?), and their free-agency track record – outside of Coyle – has been really disappointing. It would have been fine if they’d kept Krug around, but they clearly didn’t give the player the feedback he needed to stay, and now they have a big pile of 3rd-pairing LD and none for the top 2 pairs.

Ahhh… happy belated birthdays. I was a bit out of the loop there. A campfire sounds like it was nice.

Hi folks.

Well, that’s very disappointing. Call me a pessimist (it’s a fair accusation) but I don’t really have a great feeling about the upcoming season. They failed to land any of the guys they were rumoured to be talking to, and who ever said they seem to be winging it, I tend to agree. We will see.

2020 took a lot out of me as I’m sure it did you. Thanks for being here and making it better.

Yep, it’s been a tough, horrible year. Im trying to focus on the positives and be happy that there seems to be light at the end of the tunnel. We just had a second, more stable vaccine approved over here which should greatly accelerate the roll out.

I went be around tomorrow evening – dad is visiting so the living room is being used as a bedroom.

Have a great new year’s! Sonia is making traditional Slovak soup – sauerkraut, smoked meat, dried mushrooms. I don’t eat meat often but I make an exception for this!

Jo and i just started eating meat again a couple years ago. Jo went veggiehead to carnivore in a nanosecond, i like it, but not all the time. When i cook, it’s likely no meat….. That said, Slovak soup sounds delicious. I think i would risk a trip to London for that!

There would certainly be enough! This stuff gets better each time it’s reheated so she cooks enough for an army!

Jo made beef stew the other day…. lots of it. We’ve been into it three times – better each time! Okay, looking for a portal!

New plan, quick trip to Monrovia for stew then off to London for soup.
