Morning Free Association: Back at It

The boys were back at it today, skating and performing drills on the ice. Media were on hand to watch from the upper decks as the players came out in two groups to practice.

Some of the players were even spotted wearing the new reverse retro designs for picture day.

Obviously, the topic on many minds is how each team member is dealing with the loss of Zdeno Chara. Each player is handling it differently. Charlie McAvoy, who has played most of his time with the giant defenseman, is hoping to fill in some of the leadership void in the wake of Chara’s exit.

Brad Marchand spoke with the media about the return of Kevan Miller and about his own hernia surgery. Apparently, Marchy has been dealing one side of his abdomen needing repair for about two years and that the other side starting acting up so it was time for surgery. He couldn’t sprint or run and he figures that he was functioning at about 80%. Yeah, he was at 80% in his 100 point season. As his coach remarked later, his 80% was really good.

Patrice Bergeron gave the media some availability and the part that was released by the Bruins Twitter account seemed to focus heavily on leadership. I wonder why?

THe Bruins aren’t tipping their hand much other than saying they have an obvious choice. Bruce Cassidy weighed in on the timeline for the announcement.

Bruce Cassidy also confirmed that David Pastrnak will not be ready in time for the start of the season. In the meantime, it seems like it’s a battle between Jack Studnicka and Anders Bjork for that temporary gig on the top line right wing.

As was mentioned before, the team went in two groups. Here are the lines for each group.

One last piece of Bruins news: The Providence Bruins announced their plan for their season, notably where they will play. This year, they’ll be playing a new location that is very close to a couple of people here. The P-Bruins will play their home games in Marlborough, MA at the New England Sports Center. Why? Well for two reasons: their home arena the Providence Civic Center Dunkin Donuts Center (The Dunk) is unavailable due to it being used as a Covid testing site and the team owner also owns the sports complex. The New England Sports Center is huge, boasting 8 rinks of 200′ x 85′ ice among other amenities. It’s just too bad that no fans will be permitted inside to watch the games.

Morning all!

Just digging through my mail, and I just got a coupon that expires… last Thursday. My auto dealership just loves to send out service coupons for whatever auto service I’ve just had done (and thus cannot use), pretending that they’re doing me this big favor. This one is just shameless – I know the post office is a bit gakked up in some of the big cities, but I’m supposed to believe that it took over a week for a postcard to travel 14 miles?

Morning all. I agree with what IW said yesterday about not being happy about being back to work. Boo! I need to find lots of money so I can retire.

Morning all.

I’m about ready to watch some hockey. I don’t really have high hopes for the season, but that just means there’s a better chance to be pleasantly surprised!

Greetings from the land of the locked down. We were already in a high-restriction area so there’s not much difference, but Leah will be schooling via zoom (or google classroom) for the next few weeks. Ho hum.

Was your dad able to get home before the lockdown?

He did indeed, thanks. Headed back yesterday lunchtime – although they’re not exactly stopping cars and asking why people are out and about. This is one of the issues – they tell everyone the rules and then do nothing to enforce them. Grr. (apart from close the shops and pubs).

Sonia’s had to go into work today as that job she can only do from the office, so that’s a three-mile walk. Luckily the weather is good today. Each worker will have the office to themselves for one day per week so that’s about as safe as it can be.

We’ve got a deal like that going with our office – we need to take our temperature and record it in a smart-phone app supplied by IT to make sure we aren’t feverish, and we coordinate with the managers to make sure only 1 person is in the office at a time.

Considering this is a 30 person office, it’s still pretty restrictive. I’ve probably only gone in 4x in the last 10 months, and twice I cut short my time so another guy could come in.

Hey! Just got a text – my Dad is scheduled for a COVID shot in 3 weeks.

It really should be sooner – he’s in a communal living situ and just had to quarantine due to contact with an infected staff member. But at least it’s something.

That’s great. They’re saying here all over-70s should have had the first shot by mid February – although also plenty of people saying that’s overambitious.

Good Morning!
Wow! Life without Zee begins. No one person is going to fill that leadership role. Yes, St Patrice should be captain, but it will be leadership by commitee, in my humble opinion. Marchand will play a huge role AND a couple of those third/ fourth tier defensemen (Kampfer and Moore) will play big roles. The latter are veteran players who have learned how to stay in a league that they don`t belong in by hard work and attention to detail. That could benefit the young d men (fill in your adverb here) _________ly…

I think I’ve convinced my autocorrect that some words are actually spelled with a number in the middle of them!

I wonder if the Kevan Miller extension was a contingency plan for veteran leadership with the expectation that Z would opt to leave (rather than be used as a 7th D).

Aside from Miller, the veterans in the defensive lineup are Moore & …Carlo? I mean, I know Kampfer isn’t a kid, but he’s had problems staying in the lineup in the NHL. At least Miller has played 1st & 2nd pairing minutes and should be able to spot when guys are making mistakes, even if he’s not above making them himself.
