Morning Free Association: Hockey is Coming

Today being Tuesday means that we’re one day closer to the return of NHL hockey. Today is the day that teams must finalize their roster and be in cap compliance, as our friends at Cap Friendly have pointed out.

The Boston Bruins have cut down their roster by waiving Steven Kampfer, Zach Senyshyn, Greg McKegg, Paul Carey, and Anton Blidh.

At this point, these players could be part of the taxi squad. Still, they would have to clear waivers to make it to that part of the roster.

Brad Marchand and Kevan Miller are back from injury and look to be on the ice for the first game. David Pastrnak is still about a month out from returning. The battle for his temporary spot seems to have been won by Jack Studnicka. This really shouldn’t be a surprise. Early in camp, it seemed that Anders Bjork or even Senyshyn were trying out for that spot with it being Studnicka’s to lose. Well, he didn’t. What will be interesting is seeing where Studnicka will end up once Pasta comes back. He is a right shot center who can play right wing. So, who will he edge out? Since the top three lines seem to be set with the addition of Craig Smith in free agency, it looks like the fourth liners (Anders Bjork, Sean Kuraly, Chris Wagner) will have to keep up their play up.

As for the defensive pairings, it looks like Matt Grzelcyk has landed on the second pairing with Brandon Carlo, drawing comparisons to that of the Krug-Carlo combination of the past couple of years. Which is great; Bruce Cassidy has always loved having a puck mover and a stay-at-home type on each pair. Kevan Miller looks to replace Connor Clifton right now with a much improved Jake Zboril on his left side. The big surprise is that the new 55, Jeremy Lauzon, is playing on the top pair with Charlie McAvoy. IS he there to add a little muscle? Who knows, but it is happening.

The lines as they look right now:

Brad Marchand – Patrice Bergeron – David Pastrnak
Jake DeBrusk – David Krejci – Ondrej Kase
Nick Ritchie – Charlie Coyle – Craig Smith
Anders Bjork – Sean Kuraly – Chris Wagner

Jeremy Lauzon – Charlie McAvoy
Matt Grzelcyk – Brandon Carlo
Jake Zboril – Kevan Miller

Tuukka Rask
Jaroslav Halak

Oddly enough, there isn’t a huge amount of information on what is happening to some players like Trent Frederic or Karson Kuhlman. Hopefully, that will be solved today.

One last thing: The Bruins also announced that they are to play one of the two outdoor games at Lake Tahoe against the Philadelphia Flyers.

Yeah, the ice isn’t on the lake but rather made between a couple of holes on the golf course. It will look beautiful to have mountains in the background, if you can see them, but it’s still a little bit lame.

What’s going on with Vaakanainen? I expected to see him on the list although don’t know much about what he did after his couple of appearances last season.

Yeah, the relative silence around Urho is confusing. I guess he was playing in the Finnish league and bailed once AHL/NHL seasons drew close. His ELC is technically on the P-Bruins cap but he is still at camp. I’m forgetting his waiver status, but I presume he would at least need to log an announced “assigned to Providence” transaction if they boot him down, (similar to an emergency call-up).

Sweeney is quoted as mentioning him yesterday:

“Right now, we like the progression of Lauzon, Zboril, and Vaakanainen in camp. Johnny Moore is looking healthy again after his shoulder surgery.”

So I guess that means he’s slightly behind Zboril in the competition for the 3-LD spot with Moore as 7th D if cleared to play?

That D….. I hope Lauzon can fill big shoes. I do wish Big Z was here to guide him through one more campaign. Hope springs eternal on the eve of the new season!

Morning all. Had a bitch of a time trying to fall asleep last night.

Yay hockey? Still not sure how I’m feeling about it all.

Good Morning!
That’s a big waiver list. Did anyone else notice that Andrew Ladd is on waivers? He’s a great third – fourth line guy…. just saying’.
Heading back to work outdoors today. It never got above 28*f yesterday, but lots of layers kept me warm. I really need to wrap this job up. I have at least three more days.

I was assured that all week we would have high temps slightly above 40° F.
Hasn’t happened yet.

Had to patch a woodpecker-generated hole in my siding this Saturday Held off on sealing around the edges because it was supposed to be warmer on Sunday – it was not. Needed to get a new tube of sealant because the only one I had that could handle temps below 40 was too gummy to trust (or to squeeze out). The old one was clear (and in a strangely convenient toothpaste-style tube), but couldn’t find it again, so I found the next closest thing – didn’t realize it was bright white. Now I look up at my wall, and there’s a bright white line around the patch, and I am only 50% sure it is fully set. But it’s 20′ off the ground and I am not fucking with it again.

And man, that stuff was getting everywhere – it was like the pink bathtub stain in The Cat in the Hat. “Ack, it’s on the outside of the tube!” “it’s on the caulking gun!” “It won’t come off the putty knife!” “It’s on my hands!” “It’s on my sleeve”

“BURN THE HOUSE BEFORE IT SPREADS FURTHER!”

Damn those woodpeckers! Next time I come to America I’ll smuggle in a few wild parakeets. They take over the peckers’ habitats.

That’s a great way to make it more interesting while we don’t have crowds at games. They don’t even need to worry about infrastructure, how the fans can get to the venue etc. They could play anywhere.

It is pretty neat, but sad to not have fans there.

I just updated the game start times in the calendar (they hadn’t been posted when I first entered them, so I’d put in placeholder times), An interesting side effect of not having fans in the arenas – games at the Capital One Arena & Prudential Center are starting at 7pm EST rather than 7:30.
I guess traffic delays don’t matter when you’ve got 50 guys showing up at mid-day rather than 17000 at rush hour.

Good! Midnight starts are a lot more friendly for me than 12 30!
