Game Day Thread: Bruins @ Devils Matinee Game

A Swimming Manatee

BEHOLD THE GLORIOUS MANATEE!

The Bruins are in New Jersey to play the Devils this afternoon.

After a whopping 1 games, the Bruins are at 1-0-0, which is good for 4th place in the Eastern division, and something like 13th in the league behind, whatever that means at this point.

Last time, on Bruins hockey…
The Bruins were on the road, facing the Devils at an empty Prudential Center for the 1st game of the season.

The Bruins would dominate play in the first period, scoring first on one of 16 shots – a Brad Marchand lamp lighter.
The next two periods would be much more even, with 2 goals given up in the 3rd, and a rare goal from Nick Ritchie – a 3rd period tap-in on a cross-crease pass from… Brad Machand, presenting Ritchie with fairly wide open net.
Tuukka would quickly give up a game-tying goal to youngster Ty Smith on a hopping shot through a net-front crowd.

In the 3-on-3 overtime period, the Devils would dominate puck possession, and get multiple unimpeded shots on Tuukka, who skillfully stonewalled them.

In the shootout, Devils goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood continued his strong performance, but not strong enough as Brad Marchand would score the singular goal in the 3rd shooting round for the walk-off victory.

Bruins would win 3-2.

What will be the lineup today?

It still feels little alien.

There’s a few things happening here.

David Pastrnak is still out after off-season surgery, but Marchand managed to make the roster on Thursday. Rookie Jack Studnicka skated in the RW spot on that line.

Oft-injured defensemen Kevan Miller made his season debut on Thursday, and will continue as 3rd RD for the forseeable future. He was paired with Jakub Zboril.

Charle McAvoy has been paired with Jeremy Lauzon, who is in no way a #1 NHL defenseman. Matt Grzelcyk – to no one’s surprise- has been paired with Carlo. Expect Grizz to get lots of special teams time, and he may end up paired with McAvoy on key shifts.

Craig Smith was a scratch on Thursday with a lower body injury. He is a game time decision.

Jack Studnicka should be a healthy scratch today, and Craig Smith expected to play on Charlie Coyle’s right, bumping Anders Bjork to the top line.

Jaroslav Halak will be in goal tonight.

Last time we saw the Devils was err… Thursday night, in the Bruins season opener where the Bruins defeated them in a shootout at 3-2. Now they are at 0-0-1 (1 points), which has them just behind the Bruins at 5th in the newfangled “East” division.

Since last time, the Devils did no transactions that I’m aware of, since it has only been 2 days. Mackenzie Blackwood has been a big performer for the Devils in net – Schneider is no longer with the team

Ah! Went for dinner and missed the goal. And a short! Still no 5 on 5, then …

Think Kase got a stick in the face there. MSG didn’t notice – don’t know whether NESN did.
