Morning Free Association: Grit Without Gritty

The hottest accessory in Boston is called “an even strength goal”. Last night, the Boston Bruins collected three of those from three different players: Jack Studnicka, Charlie Coyle, and My Boyest of Boys, Brandon Carlo.

But that’s not the whole story. Before scoring their first goal in the third period, the B’s were already in a 2-0 hole thanks to Claude Giroux and James Van Riemsdyk. The first period was goalless, the second belonged to the Flyers. The third was a mixed bag. Overtime was scoreless. The shootout was where it was won.

Early in the third, Jack Studnicka scored his first NHL goal and the Bruins first 5-on-5 of the season.

A little over a minute later, Charlie Coyle tried it out because he figured it looked like fun.

All tied up!

About five minutes later, Travis Sanheim’s score gave the lead back to the Flyers.

At 13:04, Jakub Zboril was cross-checked by Scott Laughton. It only took Nick Ritchie 18 seconds to become the Bruins leading goal scorer (on the season) with his second PPG.

Then my Boyest of Boys brought the lead to the Bruins again with a rocket with a one-timer just above the faceoff circle.

As my one boy giveth, the other taketh away. Sean Kuraly was called for a cross-check against Claude Giroux seconds later leading to a PPG from JVR to tie up the game once again.

Were it not for some fantastic saves from Tuukka, the Bruins would’ve lost this game in the overtime period.

He had multiple saves from dangerous areas.

In the shootout, Tuukka was solid and the only “goal” was from Jake DeBrusk. He sold his shot really well, looking forward but shooting for the corner.

Bruins win another game in the shootout.

What a difference a year makes.

Still no grit in the flyers?

Oh, was it Giroux who did that flop in front of Kuraly? I’d thought it was Konecny. Getting a penalty resulting in a goal-against after that was pretty galling.

Morning folks.

You wait 11 periods for an even-strength goal and then three show up at once!

Only caught the highlights – looked like Bs were unlucky not to come out of the first period with the lead?

Was it a gutsy comeback in the third or did Philly let up after going 2-0 up?

Gutsy comeback all the way! After evening the score at 2, they gave up the lead, then scored two. Lots of grit in this one!

Ah – good to hear! Hard to glean the true picture from the highlights sometimes – especially when they have so many goals to show.

Yeah, definitely a good comeback. I’m still pissed off that it went to OT. That’s 3 OTs in 4 games. They don’t even have the ROW because both wins were in the shootout.

Hi Pals!
Yay! Goals!!! We knew this team would get some someday. Four in the third? Awesome. Lots of contributors… also good. Is Nick Ritchie going to become a power forward? I hope so!!!
Also….TUUKKA!!!!!!

Is Nick Ritchie going to actually contribute points to this team? I’m still assuming it’s fools gold, but stranger things have happened. He is certainly the more promising of the two Ritchies.

Happy to see Tuukka’s success!
