Morning Free Association: Don’t Get Too Cute, Just the Right Amount

The Boston Bruins have now played 6 games of their 56 game regular slate or about 10.7% of the season. Of those games, the Bruins have played 4 into overtime, 2 of those into the shootout. This is a heck of a way to start a new year.

Often, the Bruins have a modest lead which they blow before the 60 minute mark. That happened again last night against the Penguins. After scoring goals in each of the first 2 periods, the B’s allowed the Pens back in the game in the third to tie it up.

One of the big problems the Bruins had was penalties: the Penguins had 6 power play opportunities of which they capitalized on none. Thankfully the penalty kill did a great job of pressuring them and keeping the Pens in their own zone, even scoring a shorty.

One of their strengths continues to be Nick Ritchie as a netfront presence on the power play. Man, that guy was made for deflections and dishes.

Sadly, the third period belonged to the team from Pittsburgh. It didn’t help that Tuukka Rask apparently overstretched at one point and seemed to tweak something. He remained in the game.

In overtime, a scenario of what not to do and what to do occurred. Pittsburgh had a 2 on 0 opportunity with John Marino and Kris Letang. They decided to get a little too cute around the net, missing an a chance to score.

Fourteen seconds later, in a nearly identical sequence, Craig Smith and David Krejci traveled the other direction and showed how it’s done.

Scoring is fun, let’s do more of it.

One last note: Jake DeBrusk went down early in the game wit a lower body injury. There’s no news of what it is or the severity.

Hi folks. Just finished watching the game. NHL tv are inconsistent with how long they leave their blackouts in place for!

A shame the Pens were able to get back into it but they’re a good team. And it was nice to show them how to bury a 2-on-0 at the end there!

I was watching the Bruins on one screen and the Pride on another. It was confusing as hell because I would be rooting for the team in black vs the team in white & gold on one screen and the team in gold vs the team in black on the other.
And once I wanted to ignore the B’s game, and see them wrap it up early, they started choking it up, and extending into OT.
So the B’s are in 3-on-3 in OT on the big screen while the Pride are in a 5-on-3 PP on the laptop. And both teams gave up a breakaway at the same damn time.

Then once the Bruins OT ended, the Pride , in quick succession, took 2 penalties at once, lost their team captain to injury and gave up two goals – much of which I didn’t see – and I had to turn it off.

Ahhh! Well they do say men aren’t good at multitasking! A benefit of the time difference is Theres rarely anything else going on when I watch a Bs game live!

Good Morning!!
Tough to watch third period, but at least they won. I wasn’t thrilled with some of those penalty calls. Tim Peel has never made many fans in Boston and last night was no exception. Still, a team has to play through it and the Bruins did just that. Tuukka was amazing, but what the he’ll happened on that first Pens goal? Anyway, very pleased with the young D. Zboril and Luzon looked particularly good and I always love Cliffy Hockey!!

Big fan of Cliffy! Zboril keeps giving up chances by mis-handling passes to him, especially in OT. Or maybe the passes aren’t very good! He does a lot of good things right too though.

Did you hear they had three refs and one linesman show up because of a scheduling error?!

Haha, yes! I used to work for a scheduler that refused to use computers. He would call you at the beginning of the season and you had to write down your games. You’d go to a rink sometimes and see an empty parking lot. Conversely, you could wind up with two teams of officials another day. When you called him, you would hear the rustling of paper as he reviewed all his clipboards and notebooks. I loved him as he would give me a hundred games every season. But every once in a while, he’d screw you.
