Morning Free Association: Pasta al Fresco

Before the season began, as I looked at the way the divisions were shaping up, I said to my Bearly on Topic cohorts that I believed the matchups against the Philadelphia Flyers were going to be fun. I didn’t qualify it more than that Philly is a talented team on the rise and that those games against the Flyers always seemed like real battles due to their size. I didn’t anticipate that they would be this fun and that the Flyers would be 0-3-2 against the B’s 5 games in.

The Boston Bruins are not kind. The Flyers are still ailing from the Covid protocols which has seen their top players (Claude Giroux, Jakub Voracek, and Travis Konecny) in a holding pattern of quarantine and self-isolation. The poor team was down 5 players but still managed to have Sean Couturier back in the lineup, young goaltending phenom Carter Hart in net, and the latest Bruins killer, Joel Farabee, doing what he does best. The team used up their taxi squad and resorted to playing 7D, using at least one blue liner as a forward for his first time since he was a kid.

The story of the previous day’s matchup between the Avalanche and Golden Knights was the weather. Play stopped after the first period during which the ice became unsuitable for skating due to sunny skies and relatively warm weather. In fact, play wouldn’t resume until 9pm PT/ 12am ET. Due to this, the Flyers-Bruins game was moved back so the worst of the sun would be done by gametime.

As has become tradition after the 2019 Winter Classic, the Bruins players donned a preplanned wardrobe to commemorate their playing this special game. This look was to celebrate the 1990’s era, which their reverse retros were based upon.

This was the game view.

I could get into the whole game but quite frankly, it was basically over after the second period. Pasta scored in each period to get his 10th career regular season hat trick and second hatty against these Flyers this season.

Trent Frederic scored his first NHL goal. As IW said to me after the goal, “Trent Frederic is living his best life.” I would say so: this season he’s called PK Subban “a fucking loser” after Subban took offense to a hit and not wanting to fight, he fought Tom Wilson even after an official warned him not to, and now he’s got his first official NHL goal.

Bergy did Bergy things.

Really, the Bruins didn’t do too much wrong. I mean, with this team, you have to know that even when they get down a goal, which happened for a brief amount of time, they will find a way to come back.

It seems that the boys really enjoyed the experience.  In his postgame interview Pasta thanked the ice crew for making the condition of the ice so good.

I’m not exactly sure why the NHL hasn’t paid the attention to Pasta that he truly deserves. He’s a straight-up character, a joy to watch, and even funnier when he isn’t even trying. Seriously, this kid is a goal scoring machine without a bad bone in his body. He just delivers moments.

So after two home games (yes, this was considered a home game for the B’s) in this month of February, the Bruins finish out the month on the road, starting on Thursday night with a back-to-back at the Islanders and at the Rangers followed by a Sunday manatee game against the Rangers.

That 2nd period was a lot of fun. The first was a little weird, with the sun hammering down on them. But the views were gorgeous!
It’s a little sad to play the Flyers without Giroux, Konecny, Voracek, etc.

Just seen the top seven scorers in the league are all from the Canadian division (and from five different teams). What are they doing up there??

Jo and I have been driving around with the snowblower in the back of the van. I built a ramp and we blow snow everywhere we go!!!

Abbreviated weekend up north. We dug out our fire pit (again!) and had a cozy fire in our snow fort Saturday night. The high snow walls kept the wind out and heat in. So great. Our neighbor came over, but couldn’t find us…. the snow banks hid us!!! So much fun!

Saw your snow fort pics on FB. It looked fantastic!

No need for snowblowers here – it hasn’t dropped below 10C all week (including at night!)

Heya,

Well that looked fun! More Pasta goals, Frederic’s first (that one’s been coming for a while).

I’m sure for that first goal the commentator said the sun was in Carter Hart’s eyes. Even though it was behind him,.. I was expecting the game to be in the dark – hadn’t realised Tahoe is not on Eastern Time!

I think the sun was in Tuukka face. I thought the Flyers would attempt more shots from the left point to take advantage.

Yeah the way those first two goals went in I thought both teams would throw everything on net

I used to play in Katonah, NY in the summer. We used to get some NY Rangers come play with us as Ted Sator’s (ranger GM) secretary was one of our goalies. Anyway, it was often foggy in that rink on hot summer days. I would throw it on net from anywhere!!! grin

A shot on goal is never a bad play. You miss 100 per cent of the shots you don’t take. etc, etc!

100% of the shots you don’t take, never wind up in the net!
