Morning Free Association: Scoring Woes

I’m not sure what to say about this current Boston Bruins team.

In a way it’s hard to pick on them since they’re still in the midst of their injury woes and COVID protocols for multiple players. With the addition of Brad Marchand before Saturdays game against the Buffalo Sabres, the Bruins now have three players on the COVID list, the others being Jake DeBrusk and Sean Kuraly. Jeremy Lauzon has returned to the lineup but the B’s are still without two of their defensemen from the opening night roster. Brandon Carlo, who’s been out for more than 3 weeks at this point, and Kevan Miller, unable to play prior to the Lake Tahoe game should be returning soon. And of course, Tuukka Rask has played one period of hockey since March 7th, when the team dropped a home game to the visiting New Devils, 1-0.

Some things never change.

The Bruins this weekend weren’t spectacular. They barely won a game against the lowly Buffalo Sabres, losers of 16 (now 17) straight; a team who was without the services of Eric Staal (traded to a team on his “Do Not Trade” list) and Jack Eichel. Then, the Devils came to town, and the Bruins couldn’t even score a goal.

I could complain about the officiating, which was as uneven as it gets, but why bother. The team had chances, took 40 shots on goal, and still couldn’t get a puck by Mackenzie Blackwood. Did Blackwood just become the new Braden Holtby?

The B’s even had 4 power play opportunities, including a double minor, and couldn’t even score with the man advantage. It was in the final minutes, when Jaro Halak skated off for the extra attacker, that the B’s seemed to come alive, only to have a goal called back for goaltender interference and to have a puck cleared off the line before it fully crossed.

All of that is super frustrating. Maybe instead of playing Tuesday’s game against these same Devils, they can just forfeit. Just fake a bunch of positive COVID tests. That should do the trick.

In other news, keep Trent Frederic the fuck away from Patrice Bergeron. In the past, we’ve had Charlie McAvoy trying to take out Tuukka Rask and now we have Freddy trying to do the same to the captain.

The result was Bergy being off the ice for some period of time and returning for the third period with a mark on the tip of his swollen snout.

When Jo and I got home yesterday evening, Buddy the squirrel was waiting on the garden fence for a treat. He knows the sound of Jo’s van.

I wanted to replace a broken lamp next to my front door, but it was too wet yesterday and it’s too windy right now. It is infuriating.

We’ve got three days of 20C plus here, allegedly.

Still plenty windy, though, and there’s an elderberry tree at the top of our garden that I can’t believe is still standing looking at how many creatures have burrowed into the trunk!

I love elderberry, planning on planting some!

It’s going to be up and down this week. 30’s today. 60’s tomorrow and Wednesday then back down to 30’s Thursday and Friday. So typical New England early spring weather! lol

Good Morning!
Tough loss, but I feel that the effort was there. This is how the Devils play – pack it in around your net, chip it out and let the speedsters go to work. Kyle Palmer is JG Pageau in disguise. He loves playing against the Bruins so much he’s developed an alter ego so he can torch them twice as often.
Got out on a very fluffy Deerfield River Saturday. I wasn’t quite ready for that level, but I survived. Woo hoo!

Go easy! What affects how rough it is? Meltwater? wind?

Lots of Vermont snow melt and plenty of rain.We were doing brunch with our neighbors(,oysters, beer, and bloody marys) when someone said “a truck just went by with a kayak in it”. Out the door like a shot and in the river with one other dude. The whole river to ourselves! Spectacular and scary. So much fun!

I finesse everything, avoid the big holes, and play it on the conservative side, as much as possible. This guy is young and athletic, a big fella that throws himself into crazy stuff and muscles his way out. I’m too old for that. Right now I am assembling a team for the big pinball event in August. Teams of three with a ball. All teams start at the same time, get your team and the ball through the rapids first. Tomfoolery encouraged. I think you need to cover this event

That sounds fantastic! Sounds like something that might be in that Fall Guys game

Just had to write a short preview for tomorrow’s game. Tipped Palmieri to score, so that will DEFINITELY keep him off the scoresheet!

That certainly is a swollen nose! Poor Bergy.

Glad I didn’t stay up to watch that one, although it looks like the Bs were a bit unlucky not to pot one.

Are they lacking attacking creativity? Is a change behind the bench required?

The absence of Marchand was evident, but I thought the Bs looked good on the power play… lots of movement, good zone time.

They did get some shots in, but the Devils are good at clogging the space in front of the net and preventing the quick rebound shots. I appreciate that it works for them, but it is hard to watch as a fan because it is difficult to see where the puck is.

Yeah, I fear he’s going to end up with a Lucic-like nose that is lacking in definition.comment image
