Watching the Boston Bruins right now is a joyless endeavour. Is it because the team crumbles with just a whiff of a forecheck? Is it because they can’t seem to exit their zone and enter the offensive zone cleanly? Is it because players get a little too caught in their head, taking shots from very obvious areas or passing when they should shoot? Is it the lack of finishing touch?
Yeah, it can be all of those things. It can also be players returning from injury, Brandon Carlo (UBI), leaving the game with injury, Brandon Carlo (UBI). At one point, the Bruins defense only had 4 skaters after Carlo went down and Jeremy Lauzon needing to be patched up. Then at another, they went down one more with Matt Grzelcyk got beaned.
Grzelcyk took a deflected hard rim off the side of the head.
McAvoy, Lauzon, Zboril, Clifton.

He would return.
The worst part is that our best players either show up and they’re the only ones doing something or they don’t show up and you fail to even notice they’re on the ice. Last season’s Rocket Richard co-winner, David Pastrnak, was called out after the last game by Bruce Cassidy for good reason: he has 1 point, an assist, in his last 5 games. For a guy whose MO is scoring and not defending, this is unacceptable. At the same time, it can’t be the top line doing all the work either. As for the defense, maybe cloning Charlie McAvoy might be the best option for all 6 slots.
I’m not going to get much into the game other to say that aside from a lack of shots in the first, there wasn’t much damage until the second. Once the B’s went down against the Penguins, they couldn’t get back up. They lost 4-1.
Heard from the TD Garden stands:
