Morning Free Association: 2021 Trade Deadline

The Boston Bruins did not have a great weekend. First, they lost a winnable game against the Philadelphia Flyers 3-2 on Saturday. Last night they had a real “choose your own adventure” vibe on defense fielding combos like:

Lauzon – Clifton
Zboril – Kampfer
Tinordi – Ahcan

It’s way too early in the day, of any day, to contemplate any of this.

In short, Kevan Miller should have be held out Saturday instead of Sunday because the Washington Capitals blew out the Boston Bruins 8-1.

So, really, not much to say about that game.

Instead, today, is trade deadline day. By 3pm, teams all around the NHL have to report to the NHL which trade agreements they have made with whom and for what. The market has been heating up in recent days with the Columbus Blue Jackets appearing to be sellers first dealing David Savard going to the Lightning by way of the Red Wings (with 75% salary retention!) and then their now-former captain Nick Foligno to the Maple Leafs by way of the San Jose Sharks.

Traditionally, I like to make up a table to keep track of all the trades but this year, I’m not feeling it. Instead, I would like to point out that the ever useful Cap Friendly has a trade tracker that accounts for multiple team deals. So, open up a tab for that page.

So, what will the Bruins do? It’s hard to tell. Being at critical mass with regards to defensive injuries, we have no idea what this team is but we do have an idea that they aren’t good enough to have a long playoff run. In free agency and the Expansion draft, the B’s will lose plenty of players, including some core players like David Krejci and Tuukka Rask, if they don’t re-sign. Plus, the market prices are very high. I kind of hope the B’s have a quiet, uneventful day and stay away from Taylor Hall.

Whatever happens, we’ll talk about it tomorrow.

And seriously, Donny, stay away from Taylor Hall.

EDIT (10:46 pm): The Boston Bruins on Sunday around 10:30pm announced that they had acquired Mike Reilly, a defenseman, from the Ottawa Senators.

EDIT (11:58pm): Taylor Hall is traded to Boston. Details are emerging. Reportedly Curtis Lazar is also coming to Boston from Buffalo.

Details emerge: looks like the oft scratched Anders Bjork is heading to Buffalo. Poor guy.

Update (12:27am, past my bedtime) It turns out it’s only one 2nd round draft pick and Anders Bjork for Taylor Hall and Curtis Lazar. Oh, and Buffalo retained 50% of Halls salary.

Hmm…. Hall seems like good potential upside, but most of his history has been a disappointment.
Granted, this would be the best team he’s ever played for – the first legit playoff contender. (One could argue that stumbling into the post-break COVID bubble playoffs as the 11th best team in their conference was *technically* a playoff run for the Yotes) Maybe he would be enthusiastic enough to buy in?

Nah, I doubt it.
I don’t think we’re gonna see a lot of Hall-Krejci-Pastrnak (“Krejci wins the draw, and the Bruins get scored on!”) I am curious to see what combos seem to have chemistry. If any.

Bergy, Marchand, and Hall! If Hall doesn’t produce, have Kevan Miller kick his ass!

Morning all. Gee, seems like a slow news day. lol

Finally got around to getting new sneakers. Amazing how much better your feet feel after a walk when you don’t have holes in the soles!

That was a fun Zoom on Saturday. Still laughing at Josh’s Cut To Camera 3 goodbye!

I guess if you were going to throw a horseshoe into the wind to see if your luck will change, Taylor Hall is the wildest wild card you could get in return.

Hi folks,

So, really, not much to say about that game.

Game? I don’t recall any game.comment image

And seriously, Donny, stay away from Taylor Hall.

HE DIDN’T LISTEN!!

Don’t know much about Curtis Lazar but he seems to be yet another depth forward. Ok.

I can understand trading picks as we have so much youth in the team, but they seem a bit directionless atm. The core are getting to the end of their Cup window and these moves don’t look likely to put the Bs in a position for a deep playoff run. Ah, what do I know?

Lockdown easing today! Shops allowed to open and pubs and restaurants are allowed to serve customers seated outside. So of course it’s snowed this morning!!

I’m looking forward to a pint of draught beer but not in any huge rush.

What temperature does beer get consumed in your neck of the woods? After hockey it gets consumed cold, no matter the weather here….. on a cool day, a room temperature beer is even better – brings out the flavah

Yeah, most of our ales are served about 8-10C I think – cool but not cold. You’re right they do taste a lot better if not chilled.

Guinness, lagers and ciders get the full chill treatment. Quite partial to a lager and lime when the sun’s out.

Hi Pals! (No “good morning” if this Taylor Hall thing is real)
If the Bs traded Bjork a couple seasons ago, okay….. Dude is finally coming into his own. Lazar’s stats are underwhelming and the Bruins already have a gozillion guys who fill the same role, so?? Maybe B rad can light a fire under Hall. I hope so.
Back in CT. Need to finish jobs here and move north once and for all…

So you’re saying that Brad “I was drafted 70 slots later than you but massively outperform you on both sides of the ice” Marchand might challenge Taylor Hall? I hope so.
