Last night the Boston Bruins welcomed their three new players acquired via trade late on Sunday night: the Buffalo Sabres refugees Taylor Hall (71) and Curtis Lazar (20), and former Senators D-man Mike Reilly (6).

Cassidy on Hall/Lazar/Reilly: “Three guys that helped us win a hockey game. … First impressions were good.”

The new guys seemed to fit in pretty well, especially Reilly who tied for second with Jeremy Lauzon in TOI with 22:17. Unlike Lauzon, who seemed to be deployed heavily on the penalty kill, he spent some time on the power play (0:58) and just a smidge on the PK (0:23). Reilly was paired with Kevan Miller at even strength and the duo worked well together even though they were both on the ice for a goal against. Reilly had 5 shots on goal and Miller 1 as they both worked to drive the offense from the back end.
Taylor Hall joined the second line with David Krejci and Craig Smith, which had itself a night. Hall ended up with 3 shots on goal and would have had an assist had it been called back after the timekeepers reviewed the goal and determined that Smiths goal was deemed unassisted after the puck touched the stick of a Sabres player. However, that line had the only two goals scored by the Bruins in regulation (the other being Krejcis), so that’s not a bad night at all. Smith scoring his 9th of the season in his 700th game was pretty sweet.

Of course, this is only part of the story. The surging Sabres (4-3-3 in their last 10) drew first blood with former Bruin Colin Miller lighting the lamp in the first 2 minutes of game time. The B’s tied the game up in the first (Krejci) then took the lead in the second (Smith). the Bs were not exactly cohesive throughout the game and let Buffalo back in the game. Goalie Jeremy Swayman kept them in the game and guided them through overtime to the shootout, which he actually loves.

Jeremy Swayman said “I love shootouts.” I believe he feels slightly different about shootouts than Tuukka Rask.

It helps when the shooters on your team are better than the ones on the other team. If you had Jake DeBrusk winning the game for the Bruins in the shootout, give yourself a gold star. Both he and The Mayor of Weymouth turned up big in the skills competition.
Double shot tonight.

Oh yeah, I forgot about the fights!
There were 2 last night: Nick Ritchie against (another) former Bruins defenseman Matt Irwin in the beginning of the second and Kevan Miller against Tage Thompson after the latter took offense to a hit by Miller. This fight did not go well for Thompson.

It was a bit of an ugly win for the Bruins but a win nonetheless. Let’s hope that a similar result can happen in the week-ending back-to-back with the Islanders.
I had my first lunch date in like a million years yesterday and it was great. We sat outside as the sun decided to come out and stay for good. The bunch of us were a mixed bag of vaccinated: fully, half, and not at all. Good thing that opens up early next week.
Had our smoke detectors go off at 12:30AM.
It’s particularly annoying, because they are linked – if one goes off, all three go off. And resetting one does not reset them all (at least unless it is the correct one., and there is no indication as to which one has been triggered.)
There was no smoke. And while the carbon-monoxide warning was happening, the standalone carbon monoxide detector was reading 0. I concluded that the batteries were old – they were – and that this was likely the reason for the alarm. The batteries are difficult to change, and I only had 2 fresh batteries, so I changed the first two detectors ands reset everything.
10 minutes later, the alarms go off again. I reset the ones upstairs, and run to the basement to unplug the 3rd – which still has a stale battery. It will not twist off the ceiling. The damn thing won’t separate from its mounting plate , nor will the mounting plate separate from the electrical box in the ceiling. It’s the wee hours of the morning and I am in a hand-tool rich environment, so a hammer and a crowbar magically appear in my hands and I wrench the whole damned thing out of the ceiling.
Blissful sleep ensues.
I am assuming this is IW and not Stripes because it would be an amazing coincidence if this happened to him and Jo as well.
I read it assuming it was Stripes!
Also, woof. Smoke detectors are a pain in the ass. They can’t gently remind you that they need new batteries. They have to loudly yell at you while you’re trying to sleep.
Why is being logged off always a surprise?
Did you try WD40? It being the cure for something that should move but doesn’t. And Duct tape being the cure for something that moves but shouldn’t…
Morning all. Week is going by quick!
Watching the play leading up to the tying goal in the 3rd period was frustrating. You could see the Sabres mostly in control and the Bruins unable to move the puck.

Hall was ok, but didn’t stand out that much. As much as people were crowing about Lazar, I thought the 4th line was frustrating. I remember when Wagner & Kuraly looked like they were going to graduate to 3rd line minutes. Now they just can’t seem to get it together.
I liked what I saw from Reilly so far.
Next 2 games are vs the Islanders. I hope that Hall (& Pasta!) can do some damage against those guys.
Mornin all,
Yeah. Bs had plenty of good chances to open up a decent lead. Not sure whether to be concerned they couldnt convert them or consoled by the feeling that on another day theyd have potted four or five.
New guys looked good, especially Reilly.
Actually felt quite bad for him getting five minutes in box for being tossed around like a rag doll!
Sat in the garden but it’s an annoying time of year – lovely when the sun is out, freezing when it ducks behind one of the many clouds…
Had that issue the other day. Got too warm with the windows shut then got too chilly with the windows open. Couldn’t find the right balance!
