Morning Free Association: The Return of Tuukka

After the success in the shootout against the Buffalo Sabres the other night, the new look Boston Bruins are hoping to do it again tonight and tomorrow night against the New York Islanders at the TD Garden. There may be a key return to the ice tonight.

Tuukka Rask is expected to return tonight for the first time in over a month. That might be too optimistic given that the term being used by the team and it’s in-house media is “likely”. It’s “likely” they will shoot him up with cortisone and see what happens.

However, I would counter that it’s a good bet he will considering goaltender Dan Vladar was sent back down to Providence Marlborough Pawtucket for P-Bruins practice.

Jeremy Swayman remains with the big club and will back up Rask or sub for him depending on how it goes. Jaroslav Halak is still on the COVID list.

Trent Frederic appears to be back from illness and has been practicing with the taxi squad. Now that the team has Curtis Lazar to round out the 4th line, T Freddy becomes a depth guy once again.

The big trade piece, Taylor Hall, spoke with the Bruins media guy, Eric Russo, about being in Boston. And what it’s like to play alongside David Krejci and Craig Smith. Turns out, he likes it.

We haven’t discussed this but it seems the real winner of the trade deadline was David Krejci. With Jake DeBrusk and Nick Ritchie demoted to the third line, Craig Smith promoted to the second, and Taylor Hall at left wing, Krejci is already winning. It can and will only get better.

By the way, Craig Smith is riding a hot streak: 8 points (3G, 5A) in the past five games. I imagine that line will heat up accordingly.

Tonight, the Bruins play the first of two straight against the Islanders. Maybe it will actually be worth watching.

One last thing: the B’s have some new additions to the practice squad. We’ve been assured that they will not actually show up in game, but you can never be sure.

I;m just going to grab a hot drink and put a chunky cardy on. Last week we have wildly varying weather from day to fay. This week it’s changing hour to hour! Talk about four seasons in one day

Shame the trade deadline has passed. The Caps might’ve been interested in taking them.
