Yesterday’s huge manatee game on NBC between the Bruins and Capitals was a wild ride. It had everything! Goals! Bad blood! Two double minor penalty kills! A game misconduct! The Bruins playing a full 60! Had the Bruins not had gumption, a jump in their step since the trade deadline last week, and great goaltending, they might have lost this game. There was a moment in the second when I began to worry about whether or not the home team would pull this out. Once that issue was worked through, the game was never in doubt.

If you tuned in to the NBC feed, you might have been mistaken in believing there isn’t another team in the universe that plays hockey for as much ball washing as they did of both Nicklas Backstrom and Alex Ovechkin.

The B’s had multiple power plays, even a 5 minute one, and failed to score on any of them. Their #1 penalty kill scored on the first of two double minor penalties against them; in the second, they allowed two goals. Connor Clifton, please stop cross checking and hi-sticking opposing players in the face. And while I know Cliffy damaged faces of both Lars Eller and Conor Sheary, they didn’t need to fucking whine about it as much as they did. Like seriously, even Ovechkin whined about some phantom call he wanted. Sit and spin, jerk.

Patrice Bergeron scored his third short-handed goal this season on the Bruins first long penalty kill. He had a lot of help from Brad Marchand, who lost his stick in the process.

Under two minutes later, at even strength, David Krejci had an easy goal when Vitek Vanacek got caught looking at Connor Clifton and Craig Smith.

With 10 seconds to go in the first, TJ Oshie scored on Tuukka. At the 20 minute mark, the Caps resident pest Garnet Hathaway got into it before the team left for the rooms, making a blindside hit on a Bruin full 2 seconds after the intermission buzzer. He and Curtis Lazar would start out the second in their respective penalty boxes.

Just after the matching penalties expired, Cliffy did it again, this time to Conor Sheary who was bleeding from his mouth. The initial penalty was not caught by the refs and then was called once Sheary went to show an official the result. Clifton’s time in the box led to two goals against and the Capitals taking the lead.

This was when I worried the Bruins might lose their game. I needn’t worry because while Washington capped out at 3 goals, Boston did not. Brad Marchand, David Krejci, and Patrice Bergeron would make the team regain the lead and put the game almost out of reach.

I love how Krejci owns time and space here.

This goal reminded me of the Game 7 of 2013 goal. Just gorgeous.

In the third, things got messy. Tom Wilson hits a defenseless Sean Kuraly who was tripped by Ovechkin, who got no penalty. Wilson certainly didn’t try to pull up from hitting the back of Kuraly’s head and I hate to say it, I can’t help but think they he would try to hit any Bruins’ head if he could.

Of course, the NBC crew bent over backwards to explain it. We’ve all heard it before and we’re not buying your lies.

Kuraly would sporadically return to the game .

Then, it got even uglier. Capitals asshat, Garnet Hathaway, boarded Jarred Tinordi, who became a blood faucet. They had been going at it all game and Hathaway went a step too far. He got a boarding major and thrown out of the game with a Game Misconduct at 9:21.

In the final minutes of the game, Washington went empty net. David Pastrnak dives to get the puck out of the zone when Brad Marchand takes over. He was looking for Patrice so he could have the hatty because he’s a good friend. But really, scoring was more important to take the wind out of the Caps sails.

So there you have it. The Bruins goals were all by the leadership group: Bergeron, Krejci, and Marchand. These two teams only have one more game to play against each other this season with the Bruins leading the series 4-3.

Four wins in a row and the next three games are in Buffalo. Woo!

The GM’s outstanding work at the deadline notwithstanding, Macavoy’s return is a big part of the Bruin’s resurgence. If they can get Carlo back healthy, they get even better!

Been fighting the neck thing for a bit. I’m trying to do the things that the chiroquackter did to fix mine last time…. have you tried rolling your head around? That doesn’t work either, save your energy!!! grin

Most of the times I run into that, it doesn’t get better until I figure out how to line up my pillow correctly to support my head & neck, and get a few hours sleep that way.

I bought a memory-foam pillow from Ikea a few months ago and it has been a gamechanger in that regard.

Morning folks,

Dare we conclude that the Bruins are now … good? I looked forward to yesterday’s game without any sense of dread or anything. Strange feeling.

Anybody watched The Flight Attendant? We really enjoyed it. After the last episode, Sonia said to me “say thank you to your American friends.” She just assumes any good TV recommendations came from you guys!

Hah! I’d seen the first episode, but didn’t commit to the series – left it in my “maybe” pile.

We’ll have to check it out! Generally, we watch BBC shows…. with a couple exceptions.

Ooh, I wonder if you get the same shows we do. Lots of people here complain about the BBC because it’s public funded – and everyone has to pay (if you own a TV). But I love it. They have lots of programmes about science and culture that just wouldn’t get shown on channels that rely on advertisers. Wall-to-wall reality crap on most of those!

If Stripes is talking about BBC America, they don’t give us everything – they give us the more popular BBC shows plus a re-hash of some successful shows of interest that aren’t necessarily BBC-generated.
They do have some of the better-produced science-y nature shows that will appear in a marathon showing from tie to time.

Yes, pretty much BBC America

We get a lot of BBC free on Public Television. The dramas, the mysteries, the cooking shows!

At the end of the 1st, Hathaway clocks a bruin (Lazar?) well after the end of the period, total cheap shot from a direction that a player stops watching once the buzzer sounds. A scrum ensues where all the Bruins on the ice mob Hathaway, and the guys who are penalized were Lazar & Dowd in matching penalties. It was later corrected to Hathaway and Lazar (I don’t know who actually served it) – that was a mistake by the refs. They were trying to ‘both sides’ it, when there was a particular player who was stirring the shit, and the progression of shittiness from him was obviously going to result in someone being injured.

This is after a net-front fracas where Hathaway takes a shot at Pasta, the teams mob one another, and the linesmen separate them. Tinordi threw an actual punch at Hathaway as the linesmen was letting them loose.
Those two were going after one another throughout the game. They’d actually smacked each other around a bit the last time these teams met, but one didn’t need to know that to notice the escalated violence between the two.

Here’s a useful view of the boarding hit with a useful take on it.

And we’re playing them one more time and then probably in the playoffs first round? That could get … interesting

Oof. That’s gonna be a firey matchup if it happens.

After the Wilson hit on Kuraly (a hit that was never coming from a safe angle even before Kuraly finally lost his skates) it was Tinordi who went to the box – he came over to make Wilson answer for the hit. And the hit that Cassidy was most angry about went unnoticed:

When the Caps try to play heavy, they take liberties that result in injuries & violence. The Bruins have a few players who will indulge (Tinordi, T-Freddy, and in a less insane but more dangerous way, Miller) and a few who will match hit for hit (Wags, Kuraly, Ritchie).

Ovie is a scumbag . He’s only interested in scoring goals and being a douche. The Caps will not win a Cup this year.

Yeah, I don’t think they make it out of the division this year. It seems like a toss-up between the 4 obvious contenders, with the dark-horse candidate in the Rangers making a late-season run.

I think it comes down to Tampa, Florida & Toronto, though there’s a lot to play out with the trade deadline reshuffling changing the landscape.

When reffing, I always tried to penalize the guilty party. I loathe the matching penalties and, usually, the culprit is easily identified. I loved calling a minor – one minor penalty -after a big scrum. When the offending cretin’s coach would give a wide eyed look to the heavens, I knew I had the right player!

Heh. I sound like I’m salty about the reffing today – I’m really not. But I gotta acknowledge that they could have de-escalated and they did the opposite of that. I’m shocked that no-one dropped the gloves. Tinordi offered a couple of times, but no takers. Caps are full of guys who like to make the big unsafe hits but don’t like to defend those hits.

Good Morning!
Wow! Such Bruins! Sweenius is looking pretty, pretty, pretty good this morning. I wonder about the initial talks with Buffalo, though. Was it something like “okay you can have Lazar, but you have to take Taylor Hall.”?
Hall may be the biggest wild card in the playoff deck this season. There have been flashes of his ability. Hall and Krejci seemed to have a thing going, we’ll see.
Missed yesterday’s game, working, sheetrock, mumble, mumble.

Good morning!
It was a good game for most of it. I was pretty bummed after the 2nd Clifton double-minor and the resulting erasure of the Bruins lead, and wasn’t up for the violence that was obviously brewing, but Tuukka was really good and the top two lines were making stuff happen.
