Morning Free Association: How Many Overtimes?

Right now as I write this, the Boston Bruins and Washington Capitals are heading for double overtime for the first time in this series. Each of these first three games has needed extra time for a team to win it; the first only 4 minutes or so, the second under a minute, this 20+ minutes. I know this game started just after 6:30pm but BRUINS I’M TIRED.

Washington took the lead in the second period on a Alex Ovechkin power play goal. Thankfully, Taylor Hall tied it up again under a minute later with this masterpiece.

Nic Dowd, who blocked a shot and went down the tunnel, returned in time to score before the close of the period.

Garnet Hathaway was being his normal pest self. When he went too close to Tuukka and tore off his mask, Tuukka went to town.

The Bruins continued to take a lot of stupid penalties but weren’t burned by them. STOP TAKING PENALTIES YOU FOOLS! However, somehow they managed to stop shooting themselves in the foot long enough to allow Brad Marchand to score the second tying goal. It was a rare thing: a power play goal.

After this, the B’s started to lose focus and took their foot off the gas and had what Jack Edwards called “a passive moment”. They’re lucky they didn’t lose it during this time because they were out shot 9-3 in the period. The game would go into overtime, one in which nothing would get called and nothing would be scored even though the B’s had 17 shots to the Caps’ 5.

This happened.

And then payback in OT.

In double overtime, Marchand and Pastrnak had a scoring opportunity that resulted in a miss and Pasta landing awkwardly on the ice and into the boards. He would leave the ice for a bit after being checked out by trainer Don Del Negro. He’d come back.

Finally, Craig Smith finished off the game with a wraparound goal.

Bruins win in 2OT 3-2 and take a series lead of 2-1.

Here’s a stat that’s pretty good.

I would guess that tomorrow will be a rest day for most of the team since they played a buttload of minutes. The two teams play next at 6:30 on Friday.

Hiya folks,

Busy, busy today.

Nice win. Almost feel sorry for the Caps losing it in that fashion. Or do I? Nah, not really!

Hall was worth signing just for that goal!

I don’t feel sorry for the Caps at all. They were grabbing & slashing & interfering in OT left & right. The Bruins totally dominated in OT and that game should have been over by minute 65.

This series has the potential for inter-team hatred that lasts for years, and the prime assholes have barely made a peep so far.

I only saw the highlights to be honest – knew I wouldn’t have time for a full replay today.

Since it’s so obvious these games are going to go to OT, why not just start with period four? Save everyone’s legs for later in the playoffs!

I did notice there were a lot of powerplays. Matching penalties obviously a passing fad.

A good day it seems. Bruins win a somewhat important playoff game. Warm sunny day. Am finally fully vaxed-ish. And I’m kind of lost at work. Yay?
