Morning Free Association: Four Down, Twelve to Go

Well kids, the Boston Bruins first round is over…because they won it with four straight victories against the Washington Capitals. The Bruins had the chance to stick the dagger through the cold, black, festering heart of the Capitals and relished it, taking the lead in the second period and never letting it go.

Tuukka Rask stopped 40 of 41, bringing his save percentage up to a gaudy .940 for these playoffs. Tuukka only let in 10 goals in the 4 games against a high powered attack that starts with Alex Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom and usually gets secondary help from defenseman John Carlson among others. Ovi was held to just 4 points in the 4 games, with his 2 goals coming on the power play.

Last night’s series finale saw goals from David Pastrnak and Patrice Bergeron in the second, the latter being a goal that Ilya Samsonov absolutely should have had.

Eleven seconds into the third, Conor Sheary, who I wish Jack would stop telling us is from around here, scored. Captain Patrice decided the game was too close and added on more to the tally.

The Caps thought they had one more in them, but it was called back for goaltender interference because Evgeny Kuznetsov is a dumbass, cross-checking Tuukka Rask to impede his movement.

That seemed to take the wind out of Washington’s sails and they never recovered. Bruins won 3-1 and took the series.

Postgame, Bruce Cassidy commented on Connor Clifton’s play and how he thinks Cliffy has taken a step forward, being the leader of his defensive pair, playing alongside Jarred Tinordi who’s in for Kevan Miller.

If Cliffy keeps playing like this, it’s hard to make an argument to pull him out of the lineup once Jeremy Lauzon returns.

The big story postgame was a visual one: Zdeno Chara shaking hands with his former teammates for possibly the first and last time. There’s speculation that Chara may decide to hang up his skates after this season; his deal with the Caps is only for this season. While the time spent in the handshake line is very brief, some moments stand out more than others: his interactions with his former alternate captain now successor in the black and gold and his former protégé.

Ha! I was drained from working in the hot sun. I started fading by 8:30. When we went past 9, I had to run off and sleep.

Ugh, not ready for today. So happy for the Bruins! I’d forgotten how often the Caps have wilted in the playoffs. I don’t see how they were such a punching bag in game 4. – I expected massive push-back.
I have no idea what to expect next round.

I guess I have a week off from watching hockey. I suppose I will be productive.

Nahhhh! I’ll play lots of video games.

I actually need to study for a big exam I am taking on June 4. It’s to become a Society of Human Resources Management Certified Professional.

Any favourite games?

I think GTA V or Red Dead Redemption 2 have been my faves. I love online racing games too. F1 2019 is my main one.

Good luck with the exam!

I’ve been playing a lot of Halo 3 on the PC lately, but generally I am RTS guy. Ages of Empires 2 is my favorite game of all time!

Morning folks,

Wooo! Well, that was easier than expected!

That’s got to give the guys huge confidence, especially with the Pens struggling to see off the Isles (even they even do!) Just got to hope they don’t get too far ahead of themselves. Deal with each game as it comes.

Made me smile that just after a chance for Kuznetsov they had to stop play. Why? ‘Cos net’s off! Geddit? I’ll get my coat…

Conor Sheary, who I wish Jack would stop telling us is from around here

Despite selecting the “Away” broadcast, NHL tv decided to give me a very Caps-biased commentary. They also mentioned this once or twice!

Zee in the handshake line! That was emotional.

Oh, Sonia enjoyed meeting you guys Saturday night! It’s very rare she’s still up at the time, but Eurovision had just finished …

Sorry I didn’t do proper introductions. I’m bloody terrible for that in real life. I forget that people I know don’t necessarily know each other! Ah well. Next time.

Good??? No! Great Morning!!!
Four straight!!! AND… easily could have won game one. Kudos to B b b bruce and the coaches for their astute adjustments to the PP!! Moving Pasta to his off side on the PP totally fucked the Caps in their effort to stop the Bruin power play. You’d think Washington would have tried the same thing to get Ovie going, but no….. Laviolette does not think outside the box. If Barry Trotz was still coaching the Caps, this might have been a different story. But, if ifs and buts were candies and nuts, we’d all have a very nice Christmas!!!!
Also….. St Patrice!!!! Captain Clutch!!l! Toronto, Washington, whoever… the bigger the game, the brighter he shines!!! Reminds me of what John Wooden said about Bill Walton…. “He’s the most fundamentally sound player I have ever seen.”. His goals aren’t spectacular, he isn’t real flashy…. Dude is always right where he’s supposed to be, so the puck comes to him.
Watched at the Readsboro Inn and thought I was chiming in on the action, but when I looked back at last night’s game thread…. WTF? Oh well.
Needless to say, my brother is one hot mess right now.

Kudos to B b b bruce and the coaches for their astute adjustments to the PP!!

They really got that working!

Also, something that has been a feature of the Bs play all season is that they’ve been sloppy while defending a one-goal lead. It looked like last night once they had the lead Bruce decided to play a counterattacking strategy, and they executed it perfectly. Sure, they didn’t create many chances, but the ones they did get were money!

I guess that’s a tactical option that has become available now we’ve got a lot more younger legs in the side.

Yeah, Barry Trotz would have kicked the Bruins’ ass.
I haven’t paid too close attention to the quality of coaching across the league this year.
Toronto has been kicking ass all year, but when I looked in on them in the playoffs, thre was a countdown clock on their PP unit – the same skaters had been out there for over 3 minutes! How was that gonna work for them?
