Morning Free Association: Breakup Day

So Friday was breakup day for the Boston Bruins and in some ways, that is truer than ever. With three big UFAs this year, including two that have been on the roster since before the Stanley Cup championship of 2011, there could be a major shakeup ahead.

It turns out that Tuukka had a back injury that was aggravated by a much more serious concern: a labral tear in his hip. Where have we heard that one before? Oh right, it’s the same issue that David Pastrnak had surgery for in the offseason. As it turns out, a labral tear is serious business considering it’s the tissue that prevents the ball of the femur from grinding into the socket of the pelvis. This injury can go virtually unnoticed or at least not be nagging and is common among athletes. Anyway, Tuukka needs surgery and will need to recover until January or February. He’s hoping they don’t find more damage. But, aside from that he reiterated his want to stay in Boston because that where his family is and apparently wants to be. He suggested that he would be a mentor to young Jeremy Swayman while he takes over some netminding duties.

David Krejci doesn’t know what he wants to do right now. He said that he couldn’t even give his parents a straight answer yet and that he needs some time to think about it. When he signed this contract, he expected it would be his last in Boston and the NHL, stating a desire to finish his career in the Czech Republic. On Friday he clarified and updated that previously stated desire; he’d like to finish his career in his home country because his children don’t speak Czech and their grandparents don’t know English. His reasons changed after having kids. Krejci, his wife Naomi, and their kids all reside in the US throughout the year.

Then there’s Taylor Hall who definitely wants to stay in Boston. He said he’s not looking for maximum money but rather the right fit and he thinks it’s right here.

None of these players stressed money as an important factor, they all want to be in Boston (Hall, Rask) or can’t see playing anywhere else (Krejci). Personally, I hope all three resign for club friendly deals with some short term and one longer term (Hall). It would be a shame for Krejci to finally get the second line he’s been wanting for years and then just walk away from it.

Morning all. Back to work after a nice relaxing long birthday weekend of doing not much at all. Had dinner on Saturday with a couple of friends and SatanDad dropped off some homemade chocolate covered strawberries yesterday!

Oooh, chocolate covered strawberries! Home grown?

It’s meant to be a good year for strawbs here, lots of sunshine, lots of rain. We have a few in the garden, if the slugs don’t get to them first!

We used to grow strawberries when I was a child. The birds & bugs loved them!

Good Morning!
Really want all three guys back. Wait and see, I guess.
Back in CT to knock out a few chores. Great weekend on the river, even though I poked a hole in my favorite boat. I threw some caulk in the hole and made it through the day, but it’s going to need a better fix long term. I might have to buy another one…. if I can find that model.

Are you a one-boat kinda guy? From the messages on the Whitewater group it seems collecting boats can get quite addictive!

Yeah, you took the words right out of my … fingers?

It would be a real shame but life is like that sometimes. Priorities change, his parents won’t be around forever and I’d understand if he moves the family back to the Europe. He has nothing to prove, whatever hockey Twitter may think.

That said, a short-term deal would be the ideal.

Tuukka starting his season in Jan or Feb wouldn’t necessarily be a bad thing either.

Right, gotta get back to work. Busy, busy thanks to this silly Euros soccer tournament I have no interest in!

I did hear about the Danish player that collapsed on the field. Scary stuff.

It was scary, yeah. Thankfully it seems he’s going to be fine.

He’s a former high-profile player for one of the more popular clubs in England, too. We had to completely redraw three pages of the paper just when we thought we were almost done for the day! (due to inappropriate tone in light of events).

It might be nice to see Krejci sign a ~2-yr deal, if he can get Hall & Smith as lineys again. That was a good combo that made excellent use of his talents – as opposed to Ritchie & DeBrusk or any of the other combos since Horton left. I guess it depends on his family situation.

Last I checked, Krejci was the largest Bruins contract at $7.25M – I can’t imagine Sweeney will give him that again. Is that likely to be a sticking point? Is Sweeney going to offer ~$4M and send him running for the Carpathians?

Surely in light of recent Bruins contracts he won’t be expecting much more than 5m? Especially at 35.
