Morning Free Association: Defending Decisions

Boston Bruins head coach Bruce Cassidy spoke with the media yesterday as a sort of exit interview. He talked about the Islanders series and a specific decision he made for Game 6.

Cassidy thought the B’s were really close to having it all but the team just fell short, mostly because the penalty kill was just bad. Of course, that could have been because the defensive depth wasn’t great due to the absences to Brandon Carlo and Kevan Miller and further injuries to other D-men. Jeremy Lauzon, we learned on Friday, had surgery on his other hand after being injured during the Washington Capitals series and was playing in round 2 with a splint on his hand. Steven Kampfer required surgery on his had after breaking it back in March, meaning he played with it until he couldn’t rotate his hand anymore. So, yeah, shit happened and a once-deep defense fell apart.

But the one thing that some Bruins fans and the media wanted Cassidy to account for was playing Tuukka Rask in Game 6 after he played so poorly in Game 5 and was subsequently pulled for the third period. He said that he stood by his decision to play Rask because he gave them the best chance to win.

“I chose Tuukka. No regrets on that,” said Cassidy. “We felt he gave us the best chance to win, didn’t work out that way. Some of those decisions also go through the leadership group, where are you guys at in terms of your mental psyche with the goaltending? They were all on board with Tuukka as well. They certainly believe in Swayman, but Tuukka’s been there and done it.

“That’s where that decision came from. At the end of the day, it didn’t work out. You’re always going to analyze some things after the series, but that’s when we felt he gave us the best chance to win. That was the decision. He was healthy to play. Had played, played well. That was that.”

Of course, Tuukka had been battling what we learned was a labral tear in his hip which also led to a back injury that kept him out for about a month because he was favoring his hip. During the late part of the season, Tuukka didn’t even dress as backup to Jeremy Swayman, Jaro Halak did. Can you even imagine playing Swayman behind that defense? There’s no need to undermine his confidence like that.

At the end of the day, Cassidy made the right decision. The team just didn’t have the gas or the gumption to continue the run.

One downside to being back in the office: Trying to look busy in front of the boss! lol

Hiya. I have no problem with any of Bruce’s decisions. I think it’s possible he was out-coached by Trotz, but theres no disgrace in that. It’s a game where one team wins and 30 teams lose. You need everything to come together and have a little bit of luck to be that one team. We’ve had better teams than 2011 and not won it. It happens.

Anither hectic day. This time because its Leah’s birthday!

Sonia has been backing all day. Dad and I have been installing her new fancy bedroom light, with colour changes and a bluetooth speaker. Or rather Dad was fitting it and I was trying to be as little a hindrance as possible! DIY ain’t my thing. We got there in the end.

This day is going splendidly. Woken up at 4:30 by pounding rain. Slept awkwardly after that.
I’ve got a deadline to meet and I decided to try to start work early, but my documents are on a server that is down, and the computer keeps warning me that it is scheduled to install some nonsense update in 2 days. I’m never going to get out from under this ill-defined assignment at this rate.

I didn’t have a feel for how badly injured Rask was – I don’t think he was much worse off than I suspected. I’m ok with letting him play over Swayman. Swayman let in the 2nd shot he faced in game 5. I don’t think he was going to be any better than Rask, and he had a better shot at being run off the ice than Rask did.

Good Morning!!
Glad Bruce spelled it out. Tuukka haters want to blame him, but I think the best explanation is that Tuukka was the best option.
More chores today, back to Happy Valley tonight!
