Morning Free Association: Moving On

Late last week, the Boston Bruins announced the departure of assistant coach Jay Pandolfo. Pandolfo had spent many years with the Bruins after he retired, first in a player development role and later as an assistant under head coach Bruce Cassidy.

Pandolfo heeded the call of his alma mater, Boston University, and it was to become the new associate head coach of the men’s Terriers hockey team.

Within the coaching ranks of the Boston Bruins, it’s usually a case of next man up. The next man up would have been Jay Leach, the head coach of the AHL affiliate Providence Bruins. Leach has coached in Providence since 2016, taking over head coaching duties after Kevin Dean joined Cassidy’s staff in 2017. For the past couple of seasons, it was rumored that Leach was being sought by other organizations but was persuaded to stay with the Bruins farm system. Unfortunately, the siren call of the Seattle Kraken was too much for the young coach to withstand and he’s agreed to become an assistant under new Seattle head coach Dave Hakstol.

So, who’s up next?

There is thought that the Providence Bruins could hire from within their own ranks, making Trent Whitfield their next coach. As for Boston, it could be that old friend and current player development guy Chris Kelly could join the coaching ranks, following Pandolfo’s path. Honestly, this is not a bad idea since he seems to have a similar mentality as Cassidy. Brad Marchand joked in his “Cue the Memories” episode that Kelly used to be his teammate and now is his boss.

Moring all. You know what’s fun? Stubbing your toe right before you go to bed and then try to fall asleep with a throbbing little toe that went wee wee wee all the way into the door frame.

I don’t know. That does not sound like too much fun.

Good morning!
A very working holiday! We are now out of the rental next to our new home. That means officially in the tent until the house is done. The downstairs is nearly ready to paint. The pantry is not done yet. Upstairs… still a lot of mud to sling. Sheetrock mud, that is. We have our kitchen, mostly, so that’s great.
Very sad news from the Blue Jackets. Goalie Mariusz Like iris killed by an errant firework . . Personally, I’m not that interested in fireworks. My brothers and I blew up more stuff than one of those dudes that makes animals from balloons. My brother Dan almost blew his leg off about three years ago on 4th of July. (hasn’t blown enough stuff up)/ Fireworks scare the bejesus out of animals.
Pandolfo headed to BU, Jay Leach to the Kraken. The Bruin’s coaching staff will be a little different next season

Yeah, that’s rough about the Latvian goalie.

November 5 is our fireworks night, as I expect you know. We usually go to an organised display. Not worth it doing it yourself, and as you say, animals hate it.

That list of books you mentioned yesterday – a lot of Spanish titles there. Can you read in Spanish?

I went to a backyard fireworks display Saturday night. It’s important to remember that fireworks are bombs. Luckily, we had a guy from NASA wire up the fireworks, so I think he knew what he was going.

Ha, yeah sounds like you were in safe hands.

Did I see on Insta you went to see Cracker the other night? I think they only had one record in the charts over here, in about 1993, but I loved it and still play it now.

Yeah! Cracker was playing for free downtown last week! It was certainly worth the price of admission.

Black raspberries getting ripe! I pick ’em a day early and let ’em ripen on the counter. I get more than the catbirds do that way.
Hummingbird aerial combats continue at my feeder. So Star Wars like.

Am jealous! We never had enough raspberries to pick – just grab one if you see it. They’ve stopped growing around my place – not sure why.
There should be a couple o’ tomatoes & a couple of bell peppers waiting to be picked in the garden. Haven’t ben pulling weeds, and now there’s 2 or 3 generations of ’em out there. The vegetable garden is starting to look like an unkempt lawn!

Our tomato plant didn’t grow this year, for some reason. It’s still alive, but the same size it was when we planted it a couple of months ago!

Got some decent strawberries though.

My bell pepper plants are only 7″ tall, but they seem to be growing full sized fruit. I can’t really explain it.

Living in a tent during thunderstorm season? Bleah. Still, better than when it’s below freezing at night.
