Morning Free Association: The Kraken Picked a Team!

Just in case you missed it or just didn’t want to watch the festivities, the Seattle Kraken have officially selected players from 30 other teams to comprise a roster (for now). Since a gameday roster is 20 players and they currently have 31, time will tell who stays, who plays in the AHL or who is dealt for other assets. What I can tell you is that the Kraken have their full complement of entry draft picks because they performed no trades.

However there may have been some side dealing, which will be announced today.

Yesterday, everyone and their mother who worked as an insider ruined all the surprises for the draft. I decided to just turn off Twitter for the day so I could be surprised when I live-tweeted it last night.

They had Kevin Weekes announcing picks from exotic locales in the Emerald City. Former Bruins Dom Moore threw a fish to new Kraken analyst JT Brown. Cammi Granato, who is better at hockey than her brothers and who’s also a scout for Seattle, announced a pick. Local sports heroes like Bobby Warner, Shawn Kemp, Marshawn Lynch, and Sue Bird all presented. Macklemore is still a thing that Seattle has, apparently. But one moment stood above all when ESPN lead play-by-play Chris Fowler flubbed the name of the Carolina hockey team calling them the Panthers. For those not in the know, the Carolina Panthers exist but are a football team playing in the NFL. It didn’t take long for the Canes Twitter account to notice.

Then other teams got in the mix.

Now the football team changed their logo and then thanked Morgan Geekie for playing in their organization (which he definitely did not).

And Florida just had to.

See, Twitter can be fun!

Anyway, I was genuinely shocked by a couple of the picks: Jordan Eberle from the Isles and Mark Giordano from the Flames.

I was bummed by at least one: Jamie Oleksiak, who is 6’7″ and a LD who recently played for Dallas. He was one of the top D men on the market for UFA this season but he already signed with Seattle. So the Bruins will miss out on that hunk of D man.

In fact, he was not alone: Defenseman Adam Larsson, formerly of the Oilers and goalie Chris Driedger also signed multi-year deals at reasonable AAV. GM Ron Francis did a great job of balancing term on these picks along with many others.

Now for the Bruins centric news: Jeremy Lauzon is now one the 10 defensemen selected by the Kraken. Reports were that it could be Jakub Zboril or originally, Connor Clifton. While I’m sad that Lauzon proved himself just good enough to be selected (and maybe dealt) I’m glad that Cliffy gets to stay. The B’s need to prioritize LD from here on out.

Below is a list of all the players taken.

Mini story time:
About 2 weeks ago, the city’s recycling contractor wrecked my mailbox. We’ve got these 100 gallon wheeled bins that the city provides, and the recycling truck grabbed my neighbor’s bin with it’s giant hydraulic arm and smashed it into my mailbox, knocking over my trash bin, and bending the steel arm that holds up my box.

This week, the city sent tree trimmers around my neighborhood, because we have overhead utility wires, and they just plain cut down 6 smallish trees behind my mail box, possibly smacking into it with their cherry-picker arm, and certainly dropping tree limbs on it.

After they left, I went to retrieve the mail. On closing the door to the box afterwards, the arm just broke off, falling to the ground, mailbox still attached. I ran out and got a new mailbox post, but was unable to get the box free of the old broken arm. So I left it there on the ground until I either replaced the box or sawed off the rusty bolts (it’s made of 1/8″ thick steel – getting slammed with 300 pounds of soup cans and paper towel tubes wasn’t going to harm it). On a lark, I went to check the box today, which was still lying sideways in the dirt next to the post, and our letter carrier actually had delivered a piece of mail. lol

At least the mail carrier delivered it! My former cow worker’s box got taken out by a snow plow. The next day he had a note in the box from the mailman saying his mailbox needed attention.

Oh I’ve seen those fancy garbage trucks you have – usually on videos of them causing destruction of some sort! Our binmen have to take the bins to the truck themselves, although they no longer have to actually empty the bin into it, like they used to.

I eat an apple a day. grin

Haven’t been to a doctor in about 14 years (when my jaw got fractured). I don’t think they can do much except tell me to avoid reading and computer screens. Don’t boat… already decided that that was a mistake.

I have a little sinus infection and I think it is putting pressure on the injury. If that clears and I still have problems, I will suck it up and go to a doctor.

Morning all. Pretty crappy for the whole draft to get spoiled. Let Seattle have their moment.

Yeah, it was a lot less fun, knowing that all the info was already out there.

Morning,

Oh, I’m not happy to lose Lauzon. I thought he was really starting to show something in the playoffs. Kraken have a useful team there.

Any word on what the division system will be next season? Back to normal, same as last year or somewhere in between?

Hi!
Wow! Ron Francis surprised me. Jeremy Lauzon was a great pick. More upside than Clifton (I’ll leave Zboril out of this for the moment), the Bruins had plans for Lauzon. He has a top four future, for sure. That said, Francis’ picks are more future than now. Giordano, Larson, and Oleksiak can do the veteran presence thing, but the team is future laden. We’ll just have to wait and see what machinations Mr Francis has in mind. At least, we have hockey news!
I have to leave these lost horizons for a day and a half (no!). Pack up what’s left in CT and say sayanora to the rest. We will be gone like a cool breeze in August. Life is just beginning!!!!

I know that feeling well! I threw out so much stuff when I moved a couple of years ago. And honestly, I can’t say I miss any of it! My basic rule was if I hadn’t touched it or thought about it in the past year, out it went!

Yeah, I think we still have some boxes not unpacked from when we moved seven years ago!

I’ve still got stuff filed away from when I was in college. I think “I can really get rid of this”, but then I realize that it isn’t the old stuff that is neatly stored in sorted & archived manila file folders that is causing me grief – it’s the last few months of correspondence that is sitting in piles in my office.
