Morning Free Association: Sweeney Signed Some Guys

The early part of Free Agency was a bit slow moving if you were a Bruins fan. Prior to the official start time of noon, all the hockey insiders were having a ball on Twitter leaking all the signings they knew and some of talks they heard about. Of course, the Bruins were mentioned in the same breath as players that would go elsewhere: Blake Coleman who ended up with the Flames, Jake McCabe ended up with the Blackhawks, etc. But things started heating up around 3pm and to be honest, I’m not sure I understand all of the moves but Satan81 tells me that they’re fantastic.

First let’s dispense with what we already knew but wasn’t announced until after 6pm: Mike Reilly signed with the B’s for a 3 years at a cap hit of $3 million per. His contract does not offer trade protection. Again, it looks like he will be paired with the more defensively responsible and dependable Brandon Carlo so he can play his game.

Next the Bruins signed Derek Forbort, who last played for the Winnipeg Jets. The left-shooting defenseman is 6’4″, 219 lbs and is known for blocking shots. He adds some beef to the defensive group, hopefully to ward off opposing players taking liberties with Bruins players. His deal is also a 3-year, $3M per deal with a modified NTC throughout; this season he has a 10 team no trade list, next season an 8 team no trade list, and in 2023-24 a 3 team no-trade list. With this signing, Don Sweeney has an almost entirely US born defensive group with the lone standout being Jakub Zboril.

Then Don Sweeney turned his attention towards forwards. After losing fourth liner Sean Kuraly to his hometown Columbus Blue Jackets,

Sweeney quickly moved on to sign Tomas Nosek, a left-shooting C/LW who has almost the same size as the departed Kuraly: both are 6’2, Kuraly was heavier at 215 as opposed to Nosek’s 205. He’ll probably have a role on the fourth-line seeing as he’s signed for 2 years at $1.75M each. Nosek last played for Vegas.

Then came the surprise signing of Nick Foligno. Foligno was rumored to be reuniting with his brother Marcus in Minnesota but chose Boston in part because it’s where his daughter received her life saving surgeries when she was an infant. But also because of it’s winning culture. Bergy helped seal the deal.

Foligno signed for 2 years at $3.8M.

Then the move that signifies a real change: Sweeney inked former Buffalo Sabres goaltender Linus Ullmark to a 4 year, $20M deal.

Don Sweeney discusses the goaltending situation early in his media availability.

Anyway, Linus Ullmark looks to be a weird goalie (the best kind) and his charity work is fantastic. I think I love him.

Ullmark joins his former teammates Taylor Hall and Curtis Lazar.

And now we have Erik Haula who most recently played for the Nashville Predators. The 30 year-old Finn is another left-shooter who can play LW and C if needed. His deal is a 2 year, $4.750 M deal without no trade clauses.

Then to cap off the day, goalie Dan Vladar was dealt to the Calgary Flames for a third round pick.

As for David Krejci, he still hasn’t made his full decision as of yet and Sweeney is allowing him to take his time. The same goes for Tuukka with his recovery. Don Sweeney said that he made moves to pick up versatile forwards to play multiple positions to allow the aforementioned two and the recovering Charlie Coyle. There is a lot of depth and it looks good.

Finally, here are the minor league signings.

Fried Oreo?! Does that come in some kind of batter?

Glad you enjoyed the show. We have tickets to a gig in December. Anyone’s guess what the world is going to look like by then!

Yes, deep fried in a batter! And it’s basically one delicious little heart attack!

did I need the fried Oreo?

I’m pretty sure the answer to this is ‘yes’

Deep-fried oreos are a leading source of vitamin-cholesterol.

It’s a part of this non-nutritious breakfast:

I did have a “breakfast stout” in the pub the other week. I’m not sure who drinks a pint of 6% beer for breakfast but I bet it would go well with a couple of those!

Go GB! I have a few Pyranha whitewater boats. They are made in GB. Apparently there is great whitewater there somewhere. Awesome!!! Slalom is great river skills!!! I’ve been looking for a slalom boat for awhile, but they are not cheap.

Google tells me Scotland is the place to go for Whitewater, which kinda makes sense. And also explains why I had no idea it was there, Ha!

There is a man made whitewater park in Lee Valley, outside London. One in Cardiff in Wales, as well. You need to travel to Wales or Scotland for rivers. Many have dam releases.

Wow! I figured there were natural places in Scotland. It’s awesome that you know the layout in Britain like that.

Good.morning!!!
And it is a good morning! Sweenius indeed!! I am very pleased with the signings. Reilly’s contract is a bargain, IMO. Ullmark is our new goalie. I think he’ll be fine. Forbort is exactly what we needed. Haula – fine. Nosek – I remember him playing well with Vegas. Foligno is a gem. Perfect fit for this team. Plays like a Bruin. We are going to love him!!!!

Aw crap, thought I had it down. … Not much success signing in, either.

That’s some promising depth they’ve signed. The Bruins have struggled in recent seasons to keep multiple lines scoring. They’d have 1 line carry the bulk of the effort, and another would score for a couple of weeks then go silent, and no secondary scoring at 5×5 in the playoffs.
This adds some depth there, maybe it changes it – can’t just focus on stopping the Bergeron line because it opens up holes for the Krejci & Coyle lines.
Nosek has good upside as a depth forward though I’ve seen him disappear too. Foligno always makes it interesting. The Ullmark signing made me a little uncomfortable at first. He’s a starter, but he’s no Tuukka. If they are still committed to Tuukka then I’m cool with it, but that’s a lot of $$ & term for a 1-year situation.
Haven’t seen much of Haula. Forbert is a name I’ve heard. `\_(%)_/’

I think they should have gotten more than a 3rd for a goaltender as promising as Vladar. This isn’t the Malcolm Subban situation where the kid looked good in the minors then shit the bed in a game where he was sheltered by the defense. Vladar looked like a fricking superstar at the NHL level until he was hung out to dry by his skaters a couple of times too many.

I though that too. Perhaps “promising” isn’t enough to get more than that – especially as other GMs know that Boston is flush with goalies atm. Picks are such a gamble anyway. I wonder is a third that much worse than a second? Or even a first in some instances

Morning,

Thanks for that round up. I wasn’t able to keep up with the free agency goings-on live. I miss the Bruins app, it was great for that kind of thing.

Can’t complain about any of those signings. Tuukka is out until the new year, isn’t he? So I guess Ullmark has that long to prove he can be number one for a (hopefully!) top team.

This evening is Leah’s school leavers prom (delayed from ten days ago). I wasn’t confident it would happen but seems like it is. The kids have missed out on a lot this last couple of years, I’m glad they’re getting to do this.

Tuukka out until January… then it’s up to him if he wants to play again

Yay! Glad Leah is getting her day!!
