Yesterday was a quiet day for the Boston Bruins after all the signings of Wednesday. It looks like the Bruins will likely not be signing any more free agents because they are right up against the cap with only $1,089,326 as a cushion.
If Sweeney plans to sign David Krejci, he’s going to have to trade at least one contract away. The heavy favorite is Jake DeBrusk who is still young enough to be able to work through his on-ice issues. His performance declined last season after he was asked to step up his defensive game and as a result, he found himself sliding down and at times out of the lineup. This is his final year of his 2-year deal with his RFA status being arbitration-eligible for next season. Moving him would save $3.675M against the cap. Right now, Don Sweeney is giving Krejci all the time he needs to sort out his family and decision which means that Krejci might now return until later in the season prior to the trade deadline, of course.
Sweeney also has the ability to send Karson Kuhlman and Anton Blidh down to Providence, where they’re likely going to be anyway. That will save an additional $1.475M. The bottom 6 has been reworked and is loaded, perhaps leaving Chris Wagner the odd man out. Last year was the first of his 3 year deal and he had some trouble being the player that he was just the season prior. If he were moved to Providence, he’d still make his $1.525M but the cap hit to the club would only be $225K after factoring the cap relief that is given for burying the contract. This could be a way to save some money ($1.125M) if they can’t find a trade partner.
And what about Tuukka? Honestly, it sounds like even though he could be ready by mid-year that if he were to be signed, it would be just before the trade deadline or maybe not even this season. Sweeney emphasized with Tuukka that they wanted him to take all the time he needed to heal. Whether that means 6 months or a full year, I cannot say.
Now for something fun: Derek Forbort said that he is the namesake of Derek Sanderson because that was his father’s favorite player growing up.

Dear readers: I will be taking off a couple of weeks from the blog largely because I need a break and partly because my laptop really needs to get it’s “n”, “h”, and “j” fixed. I have a separate wireless keyboard which is quite nice but the point of having a MacBook is the portability, of which I have little if I want to write. So, starting Monday August 9th, I’ll be taking at least 2 weeks off.
And Stripes, I have a suggestion for you for the jab: get some topical lidocaine, put it on the spot where you’ll get the shot 1-2 hours beforehand and it will be numb. This advice came from a NP via the Golden Ratio podcast.
