Morning Free Association: Goodbye, David

By now you’ve all heard that David Krejci chose to forgo re-signing in Boston to return home to the Czech Republic. It’s not all that surprising that he made this choice as he had planned to do that originally after signing his last extension back in 2014, albeit for different reasons. But it still hurts.

In a beautiful statement released by David Krejci through the Boston Bruins, Krejci said that he wanted to play at home for family that had never really see him play professionally, that they had sacrificed so much for him and he wanted to play in the Czech Republic for them. Family is important to him and time marches on, so it’s best that his kids get to develop those family bonds with his parents, starting with speaking the same language. His reasons are noble.

This is not a retirement; Krejci can return to the Bruins and the NHL if he wants to. But for those who have their hopes that he will return later this year, it’s not likely. If he plays any games in the Czech republic after December 15th, he would have to pass through waivers even if he signed with Boston. The Czech league plays through March.

Of course, to be eligible for the postseason, he would have to sign before the trade deadline and pass through waivers. So, not likely this season.

With Peter Chiarelli and Don Sweeney squandering much of his time without giving him proper wingers after Milan Lucic and Nathan Horton, this whole thing leaves a bad taste in my mouth. A whole lot of “what ifs” bounce around my mind but we cannot dwell on them. Instead we must push to the future. Don Sweeney signed quite a few free agents the other day, including all-purpose forward Nick Foligno. Now that his deal is official on Cap Friendly, we can see that his deal has a general NMC for this season and a modified NTC for the final year which allows him to submit a 16-team no-trade list. Sweeney said prior to the Krejci news that he expected that 2C would be “center by committee” which sounds terrible but at this point, it’s Charlie Coyle’s to lose and Nick Foligno’s to gain. I would expect that we’ll see how Coyle fares before we see what else will happen.

One trade that was being discussed prior to the NHL Entry Draft was with Arizona. The deal reportedly involved Jake DeBrusk and picks for Christian Dvorak, a young center who eats minutes on a nightly basis. He also scored 31 points (17G, 14A) on a bad team last season. Talks fizzled out after Arizona got cap relief in the form of Jim Benning taking on a bad Oliver Ekman-Larsson contract and RFA Conor Garland, who quickly signed with the Canucks. If Sweeney doesn’t pull this off by the season’s open, maybe it could be brought up again around the trade deadline.

Apparently the press release from David Krejci’s new hockey club said that they were proud that a hockey play or his caliber would be wearing a cock on his chest. lol

Good morning!
Okay, now that I’ve had a good cry, let’s start our week. I think Charlie Coyle can raise his game to 2C, although imagining him on Foligno’s wing was giving me a chubby. Maybe Donnie isn’t done yet.
Joann isn’t leaving this morning!!!! She must now work at home! Fields need plowing, much to do!!! grin We are so happy!!
A buddy came up from CT Thursday. Gifted me a new fishing pole! (Mine were old and pathetic, hmm kinda like me these days). Well I hooked a nice trout on the third or fourth cast. My buddy brought venison, we foraged a bit and found porcini and bolete mushrooms… What a dinner!!!! I like this retirement, excuse me, rewirement. Rewired, not retired. We are not slowing down!!
