Morning Free Association: What to Expect When You’re Expecting the Bruins Roster

This week, the Bearly on Topic crew put out the last podcast until the start of training camp. We recorded on Monday morning and I had it out by Wednesday afternoon, not a bad turnaround. Anyway, Geoff, aka Dr. Handgrenaid, asked us about what we expected to happen with 2C now that David Krejci has chosen to return to his native Czech Republic to play for his hometown team. My response: it was Charlie Coyle’s position to lose.

Bruce Cassidy addressed the media for the first time since Free Agency began last Wednesday. These were his first public comments on the new faces to the roster and how he expects to play them. He came right out and said that he’s the most familiar with Charlie Coyle and expects him to take on that position, that perhaps with his new linemates Taylor Hall and Craig Smith, that he should have a good season. He thinks it will be “a real good line” if Coyle brings some of what Krejci brought. It’s a tall order.

He expects that Erik Halua and Tomas Nosek, who both prefer to play center but can both play LW, will find their place in the bottom six. Nick Foligno he expects will float around since he has that versatility of playing all three forward positions. Jake DeBrusk, who is still on this team, will likely start out at 3LW.

The real question mark is Jack Studnicka. The third year pro has been working on building his size through muscle and Cassidy noted that he looked bigger than last season. He will push for a roster spot and be in the mix, Cassidy said.

Upon being asked if he wanted to play around with the top line of Brad Marchand, Patrice Bergeron, and David Pastrnak, he said no for now since that line is a tough line to play against. Always the tinkerer especially in-game, he didn’t rule out bringing Pasta down a line if needed. right now, he just wants to work on the bottom nine.

As for the goalie situation, it seems like it’s Jeremy Swayman’s job to take but that Linus Ullmark will have the opportunity to improve his play behind this defense. Lat’s face it: the B’s defense on a bad day was better than anything Ullmark played behind in Buffalo.

Then, he talked about defense. Apparently, he expects Derek Forbort to play alongside Charlie McAvoy for some minutes. Obviously it’s to serve in the “Chara as enforcer” role in which he would make teams think twice about messing with Cheeks. Believe it or not, when he was with the Kings organization, he paired with Drew Doughty.

And he expects that Connor Clifton could really call the third pair RD home. I mean, who else is going to fill out the all-American defensive roster?

So, in summation:

Now for Cassidy news:

He might be slightly color-blind or maybe he needs to review his crayons because he thinks the non-contact jersey isn’t red.

It is most definitely in the red color family.

And just in case you needed to know his vaccination and health status:

Yes, let’s keep it that way indeed.

As you know, I’m taking a break for the next two weeks or so. Enjoy that quiet, peaceful time!

Morning all. Best way to celebrate it being Friday: Tweak a muscle in your back when you wake up!

Make sure to tweak the same muscle on both sides so you’ll be symmetrical!

Ooo, good plan! It’s always good to make sure you can’t look both ways when you cross the street!

Bicyclists come from near and far to challenge Kingsley Hill Rd… The steepest road in Mass and one of the steepest in the lower 48. A few weeks ago, one of the aforementioned crashed in front of our house. A real mess. Anyway, I circled the dip he hit with orange paint to warn other bikers.
Fast forward… the street is getting paved. The paving crew jack hammered that orange circle out and we have six guys repairing that divot. Gonna get busy with that orange spray paint a lil later. grin

A bunch of them are in my area this weekend to tackle the hills!

Whenever the Pan-Mass challenge happens, we get an influx of bicyclists travelling all of the back roads in the area. On the one hand, I understand – it’s fun, scenic, and the traffic levels on those roads is less overwhelming, but local roads are not bike-friendly. They are usually narrow & a bit winding, and there’s no bike lane or sidewalk, so the bikes are in the motor vehicle lanes. But they’re bikes, so they’re travelling at 15MPH while the cars are trying to travel at 40+MPH.
So it turns out to be a big hassle for all of the motorists.

I used to bike quite a lot, but I have always been so bad at hills. I got a mountain bike, and used to tackle the stony paths through a local park – much sweating, painful hills, many rocks – but the damn thing isn’t super reliable for street biking so I stopped.

Goaltender workout unlocked:

I’m tempted to get one of those slides. Yeah, it’s $300, and will probably end up buried under some stuff in a month, but damn that looks fun.

A sheet of mylec and two boards works well. The key is the booties that go over your shoes. I had a couple slide boards. Great skating exercise!. It’s a rhythm thing.

I spotted the booties as a key part of that. I wonder if those paper painting/clean room booties, or disposable shower caps would work. They might break down too quickly.

Ok, I just looked up “falling down” gifs, and I am dying with laughter.
This one particularly amuses me. (I assume that a kid that small with her hands out was not seriously hurt)
