So the NHL is tentatively embracing the Winter Olympics this season.
They’ve opened up a season break of about 2-1/2 weeks to allow players to compete without missing games. This enables competition without NHL teams getting into pissing matches with player agents. (Because really, who is gonna tell Ovi that he can’t play in the Olympics and that he has to make Vladimir Putin angry?)
And NHL coaches are also eligible to coach in the Olympics.
So you are surely wondering, who has been named Assistant Coach for Team Canada’s hockey team?
Well none* other than Bruce Cassidy of the Bruins!
*Technically two other guys
On Monday, the Canadian Olympic program announced their roster of men’s hockey coaches for the upcoming Winter Olympics.
That roster is
Head Coach – Jon Cooper (Tampa Bay Lightning)
Assistant – Bruce Cassidy (Boston Bruins)
Assistant – Barry Trotz (New York Islanders)
Assistant – Peter DeBoer (Vegas Golden Knights)
If that list seems suspiciously NHL-centric, well it is. It is worthy of note that the Team Canada GM is Doug Armstrong of the St Louis Blues, and it sounds like Cooper had a hand in selecting his staff.
Of course, none of this is cast in stone. The NHL reserves the right to pull the rug out from under all of this because… reasons.
It’s a strong group. Congrats to all involved.
