Morning Free Association: Last Call

The Arizona Coyotes have heard back from the City of Glendale about renewing their contract with the Gila River Arena.
It could have gone better.

The city broke off negotiations and announced that they would not renew the year-by-year contract.

With an increased focus on larger, more impactful events and uses of the city-owned arena, the city of Glendale has chosen to not renew the operating agreement for the Arizona Coyotes beyond the coming 2021-22 season. The City has informed the National Hockey League’s (NHL) Arizona Coyotes that the upcoming season will be the team’s last in Gila River Arena. The parties have been operating under a year-to-year agreement for several years. The agreement provides that either party can decide not to renew the agreement for an additional year by providing written notice each year on or before Dec. 31.

So what happens next for the ‘Yotes?
Well, there is a possibility that the city is simply playing hardball – this isn’t the first time they’ve done such a thing, and NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman and Coyotes president and CEO Xavier A. Gutierrez have both claimed so publicly. And certainly the situation does leave the team roughly a year to get their stuff together – which might include six months of negotiations with the City of Glendale. Though for my money, it does feel like this time it’s for real. In addition to the need for renovations on the stadium, there have been “multiple notices” of unpaid bills by the team. As of July 17, the team owed $1,462,792 to the arena.

Gutierrez expressed intent to stay in the Phoenix area

the Coyotes are 100 percent committed to finding a long-term arena solution here in Arizona, and nothing will shake our determination to do what is right for our organization, residents of the entire Valley and, most important, our fans.”

While lots of fans are suddenly imagining the Coyotes relocating to Quebec City or Kansas City or Houston, it seems unlikely. There have been signs that the Yotes are looking to build a new arena in Tempe, some 20 miles to the east.

Well Coyotes, you don’t have to go home, but you can’t stay here.

Had Glendale not dropped a news bomb yesterday, this would have been or story today.
Promising hockey games starting today.

Hey, bog news today as Lundqvist retires. I will post more on it for Monday morning.

I honestly thought he had already retired. I’m probably confusing him with someone else.

He had that heart issue didn’t he, then a team picked him up. Can’t remember who, but it wasn’t the Rags. Maybe Caps? I think he was expected to play next season in some capacity

Ah yes, that is what my brain was struggling to remember! Used up my daily allotment of brain power on figuring out what CT meant. lol

Yup, Caps. Then heart surgery… I know he was a great goalie, but living in CT(not Central Time), one tires of Ranger, Devil, and Islanders fans… Especially Ranger fans

I spent too long wondering who CT were!

My head’s not really with it – it has been a really crap morning.

My negative PCR result came through yesterday so I’m good to fly tomorrow. However, Sonia and Leah’s tests never arrived at the lab, so Sonia has had to spend the morning trying to organise a quick-turnaround test, which is not easy, very expensive, and of course very stressful. Oh, and it’s Sonia’s birthday today, too! Fingers crossed nothing else goes wrong…

Ugh, sorry you’re having to deal with this. Fingers crossed everything gets sorted and you can all fly out tomorrow.

And Happy Birthday to Sonia! Hopefully the day turns around for her!

Ok, Sonia has her negative test. Just Leah to sort now (which we’re not even sure is needed but finding out exactly what the rules are is a task of its own).

Evil profiteers having a field day with us this week!

I’m going to sound dumb, but who is CT?

Ah, finally got it! CT means Central Time.

Finally! It was really that simple and I over thought it. I couldn’t get past Connecticut, which as a Rhode Islander, is accurate.

Who lists things in Central Time? Dumb people do. Everything runs on Eastern, you dummies

I was overthinking it too. First I thought they were exhibition games against the Connecticut Whale. Then I thought CT was Canadian team but that didn’t make any sense. Finally my brain went, “Hey idiot, she’s talking about time zones.”

For a brief moment I thought maybe Connecticut had declared independence. I mean, it wouldn’t be the most improbable thing that’s happened in the last few years!

My thoughts exactly. Why does Connecticut have to play entire nations? Massachusetts or Michigan, sure. Connecticut could match up with Alsace Lorraine, maybe?

Was just watching Ranger’s Rebuild on NHL.com… I did not realize that Tinordi signed a two year deal with the Rags. Just another cog in the wheel, but the Bruins are still missing a few cogs on the D wheel.

Oh, I didn’t know we’d let him go. One of the Bs many inconsistent D men last year, but I thought he was decent enough overall.

Tinordi filled in a lot of minutes, added a degree of toughness, and was generally okay. Back to 82 or however many games… gonna need minute eaters.

Good morning!
I will check out the women’s worlds.
Glendale is smart. Don’t get played by sports teams like Connecticut has been played. Whalers, Patriots, Celtics have all dangled a carrot in front of CT’s nose, just to get better deals elsewhere.
Jo made venison stew last night… Yummy!

Apparently, the Blues are interested in Big Zee. I guess they really liked the Bs defense when the two met in the finals a couple years ago.
Also, number one pick, Power, headed back to Michigan for his sophomore year. He likes a winning atmosphere!…. grin

Chara and Krug on the same team?

I didn’t see any Blues games last season but I heard Krug didn’t have the impact they’d hoped for. Takes time to settle with a new team I guess.

Probably just writers trying to put wind in the sails as the hockey season is stuck in the Horse Latitudes

I heard it’s a longshot since he wants to play on the East Coast to be closer to his family, which is still in Cambridge.

I know this is crazy, but there is an East Coast team that has a 6’9″ hole in their defense corp (and in their fans’ hearts)…

Maybe we could get Sonia to talk to him?
