Hello, I am back! My laptop can type all the letters now and not in triplicate unless I do that intentionally. So, let’s go!
Unfortunately, it is some sad news I’ve come here to report: Henrik Lundqvist has hung up his skates. This news came Friday morning.
— Henrik Lundqvist (@hlundqvist35) August 20, 2021
Lundqvist had been hoping to come back from his open heart surgery last year; he had a leaking value that built up so much pressure in his heart and aorta that surgery was the only option to keep him from having an aortic aneurysm. This news came after he signed a one-year contract with the Washington Capitals after being bought out by the New York Rangers in his final year of his seven-year deal. Ultimately, Lundqvist will have to have further surgery in the future.
Outpourings of praise came from all over the hockey landscape with none being better than those from Roberto Luongo, aka the best Hockey Twitter account to follow.
Congrats on an incredible career! I always remember getting a little extra amped up when I knew you were in the crease at the other end! 👑 https://t.co/5k6ghIYGqj

Two GOATS no Cup podcast??? Think about it @hlundqvist35

The New York Rangers made perhaps the most important statement. Although he signed with Washington, he never played a game for them instead playing his whole 15-year career with the Blue Shirts. They will honor him with his number being retired later this season.
Personally, I hope that Hank stays in the US and maybe melts some cameras does some analysis on any of the new network partners of the NHL. Can you imagine him with Patrick Sharp?
Oh my god, horrible news:
Unbelievable and terrible.
Hello! As you’ve heard, we were not hit hard which makes the 7-hour power outage very curious. I drove down the part of the street that was blocked off last night and couldn’t see anything obvious other than an idling National Grid truck.
With the power out and it getting dark, we decided to get dinner at Friendly’s, then came home and enjoyed books (his an audiobook, mine a physical one) by candlelight and eventually the halo light I forgot I bought months ago. I finished my book 2 days early and started another one! Only 10 more books toward my goal for the year.
At least it didn’t ruin our new Sunday ritual: Sunday’s a Real Drag in which we each brunch and watch Rupaul’s Drag Race. We just finished Season 2. Of course, the upcoming football season will complicate that.
Today, I get my Real ID as opposed to the fake license that I’ve been carrying for the past year. (It’s not really fake) The paperwork one needs for this is kind of hard to get together with everything going paperless.
Oh great, we now are under a tornado warning until 12:30.
Gah! Hope the Tornado threat has receded.
I’ve been trying to spend time outside when Leah doesn’t need me, so have managed to get some decent reading time this weekend. Started Anthony Kiedis’s autobiography (which has been out for a loooong time). Found it in a charity shop.
Morning all. Enjoyed a lazy weekend!
The tropical storm has been through and it was a big nothingburger around here, yet we still managed to lose power for 7 hours. Not the whole town, just our neighborhood. Cable didn’t go out until the UPS died. They’re all on the same utility poles. Not sure what happened. The town had come through trimming branches around the lines just 2 weeks back.
GH had to tether the laptop to her phone to write up this page.
Where’s my award!?!
A shame to see Hank retire. I’m sure going through something like that changes your perspective on life.
Hope none of you have been too badly affected by Hurricane Henri. I see it made landfall in RI today and has caused some chaos with a golf tournament.
Greetings from … London. Yes, I’m still here.
When last we spoke we were awaiting Leah’s negative covid test, which was the last piece of the puzzle to get done so we could go to Slovakia on Saturday. Unfortunately the virus had other ideas and Sonia’s no good, very bad birthday got even worse.
Leah and I realised at the same time that with Sonia having had a negative test just a couple of hours earlier, there was nothing to stop her going on the flight (fully vaxxed people don’t have to isolate here even if they live with a positive case). She felt terrible about leaving us behind but I think she’s happy she let us force her into it now she’s with family.
Leah is fine apart from a mild headache and I’ve tested negative this morning, so fingers crossed that state of affairs continues.
And how was YOUR weekend?!
When I saw you quarantined, I figured. Best laid plans of mice and men aft gang aglay, no? I loved the menu at Chez Daddy! Any chance of some takeaway?
haha, yes, my way of lightening the mood. She has actually taken the whole thing very well so far. I guess the last year and a half has taught her how to handle disappointment.
Oh man that sucks about Leah. Hope you guys don’t get any more serious symptoms. Fingers crossed.
Thank you. Plenty of hand sanitizer, fresh air and positive thinking!
Oh no, so sorry to hear! Best of health to Leah! Sonia definitely deserves a do-over birthday! And I hope, despite everything, she’s enjoying her time with her family!
That’s actually a very good idea, Leah and I should sort that out.
We’ve been video calling regularly, she seems to be having a great time. Leah has a two-week break from school in October so we might look at going to SVK then. At least after this she should have strong immunity to it for a few months!
Ugh, that’s no fun. I hope that Little Bear is feeling better and continues to test negative. But good on you sending Sonia off. She, like you all, deserves this trip. You’ll meet up soon.
Yeah, I’m glad she agreed to go without us. She might enjoy a break from us!
Good morning!
Hank has it made! He can do whatever he wants. In NYC, in Sweden, anywhere. He has the world by the balls on a downhill pull.
Whitewater weekend! Got some river time in. Back to work today. Henri was no Hank so not much to clean up. I will get shot today…
Too many Hanks! I got a little confused there. Glad there’s not too much damage. Good luck with yer jab
Going for the single shot. One and done!
With the Delta numbers on the rise, that’s probably good to get to fully vaxxed state sooner.
I thought of you with your gassed and vaxxed comment from last week. Lawson’s brewery held a vaccine clinic so you could literally get a beer and a shot!
Drunken shooters takes on a whole new meaning!
