Cam Neely spoke with the media yesterday about several Bruins related topics. He addressed David Krejci and Tuukka Rask (they’re welcome to return whenever) but the most titillating information that he gave out was that Don Sweeney is in talks with Charlie McAvoy’s “camp” about a new contract. And it couldn’t come at a better time.
Considering some hockey people believe this is Charlie’s year to claim the Norris (okay 3 at ESPN) due to his point potential with this new and improved power play. We all know that the way to win the Norris is to be the defenseman who scores all the points, right Adam Fox?
If the Bruins plan on keeping Charlie McAvoy on that top power-play unit all season … then yes, getting that contract extension signed ASAP is of the utmost importance.
Because his stock is going to keep on going 📈 with all that added power-play production:

With this season fast (?) approaching for the Bruins and the market set at about $9.5 M (thanks, Seth Jones), the time to sign him is now. I mean, even Dougie is getting $9 M a year, and Charlie is better than him.
Neely on possible McAvoy extension: “For us, the market at times gets set during the free agent signing period.” Adding it gets inflated but team has been fair to players in the past. “I haven’t heard any indication that Charlie wouldn’t want to play here for his whole career.”

Hearing from a few with opinions and knowledge on business side of things that potential Charlie McAvoy extension likely comes in at 8 years & $9M per given the current market. Like Patrice Bergeron in 2013, big number today but in 4 years, it will be money well spent.

So, Charlie getting $9 M starting next season won’t break the bank for the Bruins, who only really have to worry about Jake DeBrusk and Patrice Bergeron next season, if the latter decides to return for a 19th season. (WHICH HE SHOULD!) We know that Patrice will likely leave some money on the table and DeBrusk will likely be earning third line dollars, not second or first. Jake is also an RFA, so he has limited negotiation ability.
So, is Chuckie at $9 M worth it? Most likely. Salaries go up and franchise defensemen will continue to make bank. He seems to love playing here and there are now a group of guys all around the same age that should make this team better and stronger in the years to come. Make Charlie happy and keep him happy.
And I get annoyed when my earbuds get tangled.
Dontcha hate it when that happens? I assume she carries those around everywhere she goes.
Morning all. In more mushy brain news: Went to grab a fork and saw I had put away the tupperware of leftovers in the utensil drawer!
Mmmm! Ready to eat!
McAvoy is sort of what we thought we had in Dougie. I’m glad it’s working out this time around. Still having a hard time getting my head around $9M contracts in the NHL, but I’m getting there.
Yeah, it’s definitely going to take some time to not do a double take when I see $9 mil.
Everyone gets 9 million these days!
Hiya,
That’s a good argument – 9 mil for eight years – as you say, sounds a lot now but might well prove to be bargain in the long term.
Greetings from central London. I think a couple more buildings have gone up on our street. The only surprise in my locker was half a bag of toffee popcorn, which is now a brick of toffee popcorn. I might still eat it. Haven’t decided. My coffee mug needed a wash but hadn’t turned into a school science project. My pass worked, my phone remembered the office WiFi – it’s like I never left!
LOL about the popcorn. It’s like going to grandma’s house and finding the candy bowl of now-antique ribbon candy from some Xmas in the past. I mean it’s still “good”, yet also antique.
Or finding candy corn of dubious age
“How long has this been here?”
“Dunno.”
“It’s waxy and flavorless.”
“So it’s fine then?”
Mmmmm, ribbon candy!
Glad your locker wasn’t a health & safety problem!
Now about that jar of herring my boss has in the office fridge…..
Pickled herring… an acquired taste
Good morning!
Charlie is underpaid. He gave the Bs a discount last time, but salary for a top pair franchise dman like Chaz……. no ceiling, after looking at some lesser players getting big bucks. 9 million per for 8 years…. Wow.
Oh! We streamed live hockey last night! Habnots and the Leasts put Jo to sleep pretty early. Both teams looked pretty lackluster for early in the season…. maybe they just suck.
Nice day for a paddle on the more casual section of our river… Oh yeah!
