Morning Free Association: Soon, But Not Yet

Last night after watching Behind the B, I decided to turn to Hulu to watch one of the many games that were offered. Maybe it was Denis Leary getting Brandon Carlo’s dogs’ names wrong (don’t worry, I was offended for them) or maybe it was missing the awkward footage of Sean Kuraly getting owned by one of the other Bruins players that made me turn on the Coyotes – Blue Jackets game that made me turn to that specific game (we’ll never know) but I watched the third period of the game. The Blue Jackets totally smoked the Yotes, 8-2.

It’s good to watch other teams from time to time especially when your team is taking FOREVER to play their first game of the season. And I have to say that the ESPN+/ Disney/ Hulu bundle is awesome. Having so many games from which to choose is lovely. I chose the home feed and found it in intermission.

Watching different teams reminds you that there are good players on so many teams. Fast skaters, good hands, excitement abounds. But, you also get to compare and contrast the different line deployments. Kuraly saw less time in the third than his linemates and mostly featured on the penalty kill when he did show up but all hovered around 15 minutes a night, which seems like a lot for a fourth line. I am, of course, used to the Bruins system.

It was opening night for the Blue Jackets and their first game after the 4th of July fireworks incident that claimed the life of backup goaltender Matiss Kivlenieks. Prior to the game, the team unveiled a banner in his memory and showed the number 80 in the trapezoid.

Perhaps the most fitting tribute was from his fellow Latvian countryman, teammate, and friend, Elvis Merzlikins. Merzlikins and his very expectant wife Aleksandra were part of the festivities on Independence Day when a firework went very wrong, threatening the life of Aleksandra and their unborn son. Matiss got in front of her, receiving the brunt of the blow and passing due to the trauma of his injuries. The Merzlikins named their so Knox Matiss, the middle name in honor of Kivlenieks. In honor of his friend, Merzlikins wore 80 the entire game in net.

We all watch hockey for various reasons and we can all become emotional over goals, penalties, blown calls, and injuries. But it is beautiful even if it is so sad to see players show their human side.

Morning all. This is really cool: The organist for the Ducks came out as trans earlier this week. To celebrate she did a whole bunch of covers and posted a clip of Against Me!’s True Trans Soul Rebel. Against Me! is one of my favorite bands. Also really cool: She has an “O” on her jersey. All organists should have an “O” on their jersey!

Hi,

That must’ve been a tough night for Merzlikins.

Rough start to the season for Montreal – two goals in two games?

I’ve just watched the first episode of Squid Game, since it’s all you hear about recently. Pretty good, I will continue. There also seems to be a new series of You, which will go on the watchlist as well.

I put Squid Game into the watch list but haven’t gotten there yet. GH seems uninterested and I don’t watch much TV on my own except the Rachael Maddow show.

Have been watching the 24 lives of Billy Milligan, which is about a serial rapist from the 1970s with multiple personalities/DID. Can’t entirely recommend it. The base material is interesting but the presentation is strange. They interview all of the relevant people in weirdo settings. They have access to a huge closed bank, and interview his sister sitting in a small chair in the huge granite lobby, and some news reporter sitting in the vault, filmed through the door. One of the staff of a mental institution is filmed in a dank industrial communal washroom, a couple of his friends are filmed in a public school classroom, with the chairs stacked on the desks. They keep talking to a couple of French-speaking people, and I can’t figure out why. These guys are French, but the story is all about a poor Irish-American family from Ohio. I don’t speak French, am missing many of the subtitles, and am not sure I should care what they have to say.

Well that sounds … interesting.

A show started on CBS this week called Ghosts – it’s a US remake of a British show, which is really good, though I’ve not seen the CBS version apart from the trailer.

The Habs looked pretty hapless vs Toronto on opening night. They should thank their lucky stars that they have Jake Allen

Fargo is excellent. They try to do the accents a little too hard in the first season, but it progresses nicely.

Good morning!
Yup, I jumped on ESPN and watched part of Panthers/ Pens, then switched over to Rags/Stars at period break. Yes, great to see other teams, their line combos, their power play…. Rags looked good. Adam Fox is legit. It was just one game. We may not get Bruin games, though… I don’t think that we are “out of market”.
Great fall day here, yesterday. Colors are peaking. We spent the afternoon on the river, stunned by our wonderland. Showers of yellow and orange leaves all afternoon! Retirement good!
